Racist Cops Jail the Wrong Driver—He’s the Chief of Police
But something in her tone made him pause. He had not told her everything. He had not mentioned the remark he had made to Mr. Fitch, thinking Alina was out of earshot when Fitch had pressed him on the marriage.
"My dear fellow, she is a convenient statue. She stands in the niche I have prepared for her and does not trouble me."
Alina had heard, standing just beyond the half-open door. The words had lodged beneath her ribs, and she could not dislodge them.
She did not confront him that night. She simply became quieter, a little more distant, a statue in truth. And Alexander, who had spent years reading the undercurrents of drawing rooms, felt the shift and did not know its cause.
Part Six
The library at Ashworth Hall was a long, high-ceilinged room lined with books that smelled of leather and time. It was here that Alexander finally cornered his wife, three days after Lady Felbridge's visit.
Alina had taken to spending her mornings there, reading or pretending to read, and he had noticed that her conversations with him had been pared to polite necessities. He entered without knocking, closed the door, and stood with his back against it.
"What have I done?"
Alina looked up from her book. Her expression was calm, but her knuckles were white where she gripped the binding. "I do not know what you mean."
"You do. You have been retreating from me since the day of the visit. Every word you speak is civil and empty. Tell me what I did, or what I failed to do, so I may try to mend it."
She marked her page with a ribbon, a careful, deliberate motion, and set the book aside.
"I heard you at the end of the afternoon. You told Mr. Fitch I was a convenient statue, that I stood in a niche and did not trouble you."
The color drained from his face. He took a step forward. "Alina—"
"I know it was part of the performance. I know you were playing the role. But hearing it, hearing you reduce everything that has passed between us in this house to a jest for that horrid little man, it made me wonder whether the performance is all there is. Whether I am, in fact, merely a convenience dressed in the language of devotion."
He crossed the room and knelt before her chair as he had on their wedding night. But this time his face held not confession, but anguish.
"I am going to tell you the rest, the part I have not yet told you."
She waited.
"The blackmailer is Lord Henry Stanton. He holds Beatrice's letters, and he has demanded a final sum so large that it would strip the estate and leave us with nothing but the title. He has threatened to publish the letters unless I pay by the end of the month. That afternoon, Fitch was pumping me for information. He is in Stanton's pocket.
"I said what I said to convince him the marriage was a sham and I had no emotional weakness Stanton could exploit. I used words I loathed to protect you from becoming a target."
Alina's anger did not vanish, but it shifted, making room for a colder, sharper focus. "You should have told me this before."
"I should have told you a great many things. I am unpracticed at sharing burdens. I have carried this alone for so long that I forgot how to set it down."
She reached out and took his hand, pulling him up from his knees and onto the chair beside her. "Then we will carry it together, and we will not pay a single shilling more."
The plan that unfolded over the following days was one of elegant ruthlessness. Alina, drawing on a network of schoolroom friendships and second-cousin connections, discovered that Lord Henry Stanton had a weakness of his own: a mistress in Kennington whom he kept in secret, and a series of debts incurred through a gambling habit he concealed from his creditors.
Alexander, using resources he had cultivated during his years as a fop, obtained proof of both. Together, they composed a letter offering Stanton a simple choice: return Beatrice's letters and flee to the Continent, or face public exposure and the complete destruction of his reputation.
But the plan required one final public act. At a ball held at Ashworth Hall the following week, with half the county in attendance, Alexander must shed the mask entirely. Stanton would be there, Fitch would be there, and the ton would see the truth unfold in real time.
The night of the ball arrived. The great hall blazed with candlelight. Alina, gowned in emerald silk that matched her ring, stood at Alexander's side as he mounted the musicians' dais and raised his hand for silence.
His voice, when he spoke, was not the jester's drawl. It was the voice of a man who had worn chains and was ready to break them.
"My lords and ladies, I have invited you here tonight under false pretenses. For years, I have presented myself to you as a fool. I did so to protect someone I love, and I make no apology for that. But the cost has been high, and it has been borne most cruelly by the woman beside me, my wife, whom I married under circumstances that gave the world every reason to doubt my regard. I am here to correct that impression."
He turned to Alina, and the look that passed between them was a private fire, no longer hidden.
"The Duchess of Ashworth is the center of my life. She has my respect, my fidelity, and my heart. I will spend the remainder of my days proving to her what I should have declared from the first."
