Gordon Ramsay shares health update as he reveals why he "had to come clean" over cancer diagnosis

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has shared a rare and candid health update months after publicly revealing that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. Earlier this year, the 59-year-old announced that doctors had discovered and removed a basal cell carcinoma — a common form of skin cancer — and he has now reassured fans that the issue was “dealt with immediately.”

Gordon Ramsay Reveals His Cancer Diagnosis

The news first became public in August, when Gordon posted a heartfelt update on social media. In the photos, he showed himself recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery to remove the cancerous lesion. One image featured a bandage covering the area near his ear, while a second photo revealed the surgical scar beneath the bandage. In classic Gordon fashion, he even joked with followers, clarifying that the visible marks were from cancer surgery — not from a facelift — quipping that if it were cosmetic, he’d “need a refund.”

He expressed deep appreciation to the medical professionals who treated him, saying: “Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this basal cell carcinoma. Thank you!” He also took the opportunity to remind fans to take sun protection seriously, warning: “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend.”

What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and develops in the uppermost layer of the skin. It typically grows slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of the body, making early detection — like in Gordon’s case — key to effective treatment. Though generally less aggressive than other skin cancers, experts note that it can still cause significant skin damage if not treated promptly.

An Outpouring of Support

Gordon’s announcement was met with overwhelming encouragement from fans, friends, and fellow celebrities. TV personality Rob Rinder left a supportive heart emoji, while Romeo Beckham — whose family is close with the Ramsays — also liked the post. Gordon’s daughter Holly added her support as well, ahead of her upcoming wedding. Together with wife Tana, Gordon shares six children: Megan, twins Jack and Holly, as well as Tilly, Oscar, and Jesse.

Messages of concern and encouragement filled the comments section. Fans wrote, “Hope you get well soon,” and “Glad you caught it early,” while others expressed gratitude for his honesty: “Your brash humour brings me so much joy — be well, Gordon!” One follower praised him for spreading awareness about the importance of sun safety, adding: “Prevention is key in the fight against cancer.”

Gordon Ramsay Shares a Health Update

In a new interview with The Times, Gordon reassured supporters that he is doing well after the surgery. “It was a scare,” he said, “but it was dealt with immediately.” He also explained why he decided to go public: “That [bleep]ing plaster was the size of a book cover, so I had to come clean!” His blend of honesty and humour reflected both the seriousness of the experience and his trademark straightforward personality.

Gordon’s openness has not only comforted fans eager for updates but has also helped shed light on the importance of routine skin checks and early treatment — something he continues to promote through his platform.
