Add a drop of essential oil to an onion and no matter how many mosquitoes and insects it has, they will disappear
Adding medicated oil to onions is a natural way to repel mosquitoes and insects that every household can easily apply.
To drive away mosquitoes and bugs using homemade, natural ingredients, you can try this simple and effective method.
Add a Drop of Medicated Oil to Onions to Repel Mosquitoes and Insects
Medicated oils often contain natural essential oils such as eucalyptus, camphor, and peppermint—ingredients well-known for their mosquito-repelling properties.
Citriodiol, a compound found in eucalyptus leaves, is commonly used in mosquito repellents. In addition, peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which not only has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects but also drives mosquitoes away.
Onions are also known to repel cockroaches effectively. You can easily make a homemade insect-repelling pouch using this method. First, peel and slice an onion into thin pieces. Next, take a disposable face mask, cut one side open to form a small pouch, and place the onion slices inside between the mask layers.
Then, add a few drops of medicated oil onto the onion slices and the mask material. Tie the pouch securely and hang it near your bed, by windows, or in areas where mosquitoes and insects frequently appear. The combined scent of onions and the essential oils will spread through the air, keeping mosquitoes and bugs away.
Aside from repelling insects, onions also have antibacterial properties and help purify the air, promoting better sleep. After about 4–5 days, the onion will begin to wilt. Replace it with a new pouch containing fresh onion and medicated oil to maintain its effectiveness.
Other Natural Ways to Repel Mosquitoes
1. Using Dried Orange or Tangerine Peels
Mosquitoes dislike the fragrance of orange and tangerine peels. After eating these fruits, don’t throw the peels away—dry them instead. Later, you can burn the dried peels. Although the effect lasts only for a few hours, it’s a safe and pleasant way to fill your home with a refreshing citrus scent while repelling mosquitoes.
2. Repelling Mosquitoes with Garlic
Garlic is a common kitchen ingredient that can also help keep mosquitoes away. Simply crush a few garlic cloves, boil them in water for a few minutes, then let the mixture cool. Pour it into a spray bottle and spray around the corners of your house or areas where mosquitoes usually appear.
3. Using Dish Soap
Dish soap often contains lemon essential oil and mild chemical agents like phosphates that repel mosquitoes. Pour a small amount of dish soap into a shallow dish and place it outdoors or in mosquito-prone areas. You can also apply a little around table legs to prevent ants from climbing up.
