A drive.

Swabs.

Forms.

Most soldiers forgot about it immediately.

Daniel said, "His stored samples eventually linked him as a potential genetic match to Eli."

Nathan shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

Claire looked at him.

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

A genetic match.

Not simply compatible.

Genetic.

The room went silent.

Nathan felt the truth before anyone spoke.

He looked at Claire.

"No."

Claire closed her eyes.

Nathan stepped backward.

"No."

"Nathan—"

"What does genetic mean?"

Nobody answered.

He looked at Daniel.

"What does it mean?"

Daniel whispered, "Matt was Eli's biological father."

Nathan felt as though someone had driven a fist straight through his chest.

Eli looked confused.

Claire immediately turned toward him.

"Honey, go upstairs."

Eli frowned.

"But—"

"Please."

Nathan stood frozen.

The boy looked at his father.

"Dad?"

Nathan could not answer.

Claire stood.

"Eli, go."

Daniel walked toward the stairs.

"I'll go with him."

Nathan's head snapped around.

"No."

Daniel stopped.

Nathan's voice was dangerous now.

"Don't."

Daniel nodded.

Claire led Eli upstairs herself.

Nathan remained in the living room.

He did not move.

He did not think.

He only stared at the family photograph on the fireplace.

Nathan.

Claire.

Eli.

Taken two summers ago.

All smiling.

His family.

His son.

Except not his son.

No.

That wasn't right.

Eli was his son.

Biology didn't change eight years of bedtime stories and scraped knees and first steps.

But something had changed.

Something enormous.

Claire returned alone.

Nathan looked at her.

"Tell me that's not true."

She cried.

He already had his answer.

"When?"

Claire said nothing.

Nathan's voice rose.

"When?"

"Nine years ago."

He laughed once.

His eyes filled with disbelief.

"Before Eli was born."

"Yes."

"While we were married."

Claire nodded.

Nathan turned away.

He walked toward the window.

The same window he had looked through twenty minutes earlier.

Twenty minutes.

That was all it took to destroy a version of reality Nathan had lived inside for almost a decade.

"One time?"

Claire whispered, "Yes."

Nathan smiled bitterly.

"That's always the answer."

"It was."

"Did you love him?"

Claire hesitated.

Nathan turned.

"Did you love him?"

"No."

He stared.

She swallowed.

"I was angry at you."

Nathan shook his head.

"Don't."

"I'm not blaming you."

"Good."

"You had extended your deployment without talking to me."

"It was orders."

"You volunteered."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

There it was.

A memory.

Nine years earlier.

Nathan had volunteered for a six-month extension.

Claire had begged him not to.

Their marriage was already strained.

He had convinced himself another assignment would help his career and their finances.

Claire had accused him of choosing the Army over her.

Maybe she had been right.

But that did not create another man's child.
