She noticed.

Silence returned.

Their marriage was more complicated than fatherhood.

Aaron loved Hannah.

He knew that.

But love had been frozen inside him for twenty-six months.

Hannah's love had changed under grief.

Not disappeared.

Changed.

She slept in the guest room when Aaron finally moved back into the house.

His choice.

The bedroom felt like Noah's room now.

They converted Aaron's old office into a nursery so he could reclaim part of the bedroom.

Still, he slept alone.

Hannah did not push.

One night, Aaron woke from a nightmare and found himself standing in the hallway.

He did not remember leaving the bed.

Noah was crying.

Hannah's door opened.

She saw Aaron.

His breathing was too fast.

His fists clenched.

Hannah stopped.

"Aaron?"

He stared.

For a second, he did not know her.

Then Noah cried again.

Reality returned.

Aaron sat on the floor.

Hannah approached slowly.

"Can I touch you?"

That question nearly broke him.

Once she would have simply touched him.

Now she asked.

"Yeah."

She sat beside him.

Noah continued crying.

Hannah looked toward the nursery.

Aaron said, "I'll go."

She stared.

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

He entered.

Noah stood inside the crib holding the rail.

Tears covered his face.

Aaron approached.

"Hey."

Noah reached up.

No hesitation.

Aaron lifted him.

The baby settled against his chest.

Warm.

Heavy.

Alive.

Aaron stood in the dark and rocked him.

His hands knew nothing about babies.

But his body remembered carrying people.

Not like this.

This was gentle.

Noah's breathing slowed.

Aaron whispered, "Your timing is terrible."

The baby sighed.

Aaron closed his eyes.

"I missed you before I knew you existed."

The sentence surprised him.

He held Noah tighter.

Outside the door, Hannah cried silently.

Aaron didn't know she was there.

Months passed.

Aaron remained on medical leave.

Noah began walking.

Aaron saw it.

He was in the living room.

Hannah sat on the rug.

Noah stood near the couch.

Then he let go.

One step.

Two.

Three.

He fell against Aaron's knees.

Aaron shouted so loudly Noah started crying.

Hannah laughed.

"You scared him!"

"He walked!"

"I saw!"

"He walked."

Aaron lifted him.

Noah laughed again.

Aaron cried.

Hannah recorded it.

That night she sent him the video.

Aaron watched it fifteen times.

Something had finally happened that captivity did not steal.

A first.
