Nobody cared.
Noah, now almost two, ran through the yard.
Yes, ran.
Too fast.
Aaron spent half the party chasing him.
At one point, Noah tripped.
Aaron caught him before he hit the ground.
Noah laughed.
"Dada!"
Everything stopped.
Aaron looked at him.
"What?"
Noah touched Aaron's face.
"Dada."
Denise screamed from across the yard.
Hannah covered her mouth.
Aaron's eyes filled.
He hugged Noah.
"Say it again."
Noah immediately refused.
Typical.
Aaron laughed and cried at the same time.
Later, Hannah found him alone near the porch.
"You okay?"
"Yeah."
"You look destroyed."
"He called me Dad."
"I heard."
Aaron smiled.
"I'm stupidly happy."
"You're allowed."
He looked toward their son.
"No."
He corrected himself.
"I'm really happy."
There was no apology in it.
Two years after Aaron returned, he retired from active duty.
Not because he hated the Army.
Because his body had limits.
And because he wanted mornings.
Breakfast.
Daycare drop-offs.
Doctor appointments.
Normal arguments.
He took a training position with a defense contractor and later worked with returning service members.
His story became known inside certain veteran support circles.
The soldier who came back after being declared dead.
People always wanted the dramatic version.
The rescue.
The helicopter.
The reunion.
Aaron told them the hardest part happened afterward.
"You think survival ends when you get home," he said once.
"It doesn't."
A younger soldier asked, "What does?"
Aaron thought.
"Maybe nothing."
The soldier looked confused.
Aaron smiled.
"You just get better at living."
Years later, Noah learned the story of his birth.
Not all at once.
Pieces.
At five, he knew Daddy was away when he was born.
At seven, he knew everyone thought Daddy was dead.
At ten, he understood embryos.
Barely.
He reacted with predictable horror.
"So I was frozen?"
Aaron laughed.
"Kind of."
"In a freezer?"
"A medical freezer."
"That's weird."
"Extremely."
Noah looked at Hannah.
"You made me when Dad was dead?"
Hannah answered carefully.
"When we believed he had died."
Noah looked at Aaron.
"And then you weren't?"
Aaron smiled.
"Surprise."
Noah considered.
"That's cool."
Hannah laughed.
"That's your takeaway?"
"Yeah."
Then Noah became serious.
"Was Dad mad at me?"
Aaron's heart tightened.
"No."
"Mom said you were upset."
