Hannah's face broke.

"They told me you were presumed dead."

"Presumed."

"I waited."

Aaron laughed quietly.

"You waited fourteen months."

"Aaron."

He turned away.

Denise stepped forward.

"She waited longer than anyone told her to."

Aaron looked at his mother.

"Not now."

Denise went silent.

Hannah whispered, "I didn't do it because I wanted to replace you."

"Then why?"

She looked toward Noah.

The baby shifted again.

This time he woke.

His eyes opened.

Aaron saw them clearly.

Hazel.

Exactly like his own.

Noah blinked at the adults.

Then began to whimper.

Hannah moved instinctively.

Aaron watched her.

She lifted the baby from the crib.

Noah immediately rested against her shoulder.

Aaron stood frozen.

That should have been his life.

Not this exact moment.

He had not planned a baby during deployment.

But fatherhood.

He had wanted it.

Desperately.

For years.

Now his son existed.

And Aaron had missed everything.

Pregnancy.

Birth.

First cry.

First smile.

First tooth.

Eleven months.

Hannah gently rocked Noah.

The baby looked over her shoulder at Aaron.

Aaron could not look away.

"What's his full name?"

Hannah hesitated.

"Noah Aaron Mitchell."

The middle name struck hardest.

Aaron looked at her.

"You named him after me."

"Yes."

"Because you thought I was dead."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Yes."

Aaron turned away.

He walked downstairs.

He needed air.

He needed walls farther apart.

He needed a world where every sentence did not create another wound.

Behind him, Hannah called his name.

He did not stop.

He stepped onto the porch.

Late afternoon sunlight covered the quiet suburban street.

A lawn mower buzzed two houses away.

A dog barked.

Someone laughed in a backyard.

Normal America.

Aaron had imagined normal America for hundreds of nights.

Now it seemed offensive.

How could the world look this calm?

How could people be carrying groceries and washing cars while his entire life rearranged itself behind one front door?

The door opened.

Hannah came outside alone.

Noah was presumably with Denise.

Aaron kept his back toward her.

She stopped several feet away.

"I didn't know you were alive."

Aaron stared at the street.

"I know."

"I need you to know that."

"I know."

"They showed me evidence."

"I know."

"Your unit—"

"I know what they did."

His voice sharpened.

Hannah stopped.

Aaron had received the explanation during debriefing.

His convoy was ambushed during a joint mission near the border.

Three soldiers died at the site.

Aaron and another soldier, Staff Sergeant Luke Brennan, were taken alive.
