Kane almost smiled. "Tell Greaves's sister I am sorry, if you are the sort who carries other men's apologies."

"I am the sort who carries facts," Hale said. "She can decide what to do with sorrow."

The column moved out. Dust rose and thinned. Hale stood until the last rider dropped behind the southern swell, then went to the map room and redrew the northern approaches with notes about Aspen Canyon, Crow Bone Wash, and the places where a forgery might try to be born again.

That afternoon he met Grey Feather at the river ford. They spoke of water rights and of a coming survey that would draw lines across grazing that had never consented to paper. Hale could not stop the survey. He could warn. He could argue in his reports that a fort surrounded by cheated neighbors was a fort building its own siege. Grey Feather listened, then said, "Argue. We will also prepare. Friendship is not the same as waiting to be saved."

"I never asked you to wait," Hale said.

"Good." Grey Feather's mouth softened. "Then we understand each other still."

On a morning two weeks after the standoff, Hale walked the northern scrub with Grey Feather. The land smelled of sage after a thin night rain. Behind them, Fort Red Clay smoked breakfast fires into a clean sky. Ahead, Crow Bone Wash lay quiet, the stones they had used for Greaves's first covering now scattered, the earth already beginning its long work of forgetting shapes.

"You could have taken your people far from this," Hale said.

Grey Feather's braids moved with his walk. "And you could have pretended the paper was true. We both chose the harder seeing." He paused on a rise. "My people will not always stand with your flag. You know this."

"I know."

"But when a lie comes dressed as an order, I will bring you the pouch again, if I find it."
