There it was.
Nathan leaned back.
“What place?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“First.”
Silence.
Nathan finally understood.
“You wanted to come before Emily.”
“I wanted to come before a dead woman.”
“No.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You wanted to come before both of them.”
Vanessa started crying.
“You don't know what it was like.”
“What?”
“To walk into a room and feel her everywhere.”
“You knew Sarah.”
Vanessa froze.
Nathan watched her carefully.
“College roommates.”
She closed her eyes.
“Claire told you.”
“Yes.”
“Of course she did.”
“Why did you lie?”
“Because you never would have dated me.”
Nathan thought about that.
“Probably not.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Exactly.”
“So our relationship began with a lie.”
“I knew you'd judge me based on Sarah's version.”
“She's dead.”
“She still won.”
Nathan stared at her.
Even now.
After everything.
Vanessa still saw it as a competition.
Sarah won.
Emily won.
Someone had to lose.
There was no conversation capable of fixing that.
Nathan stood.
Vanessa looked panicked.
“That's it?”
“Yes.”
“You don't want to hear my side?”
“I've spent three years hearing your side.”
He picked up the locket.
“I should have listened to my daughter.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I loved you.”
Nathan paused.
“I think you loved being chosen.”
She stared at him.
“There's a difference.”
Then he left.
The legal consequences took months.
Vanessa eventually accepted responsibility for the forged communications and unauthorized access to private financial records.
The child-abuse investigation relied heavily on the wedding video, Emily's medical examination and statements from Melissa.
Nathan did not follow every procedural detail obsessively.
His attorneys handled what they could.
He focused on Emily.
Dr. Rebecca began seeing her again.
At first, Emily refused to let Nathan leave the therapy room.
So he stayed.
Three sessions later, he sat near the door.
A month later, he waited outside.
Small things became victories.
Emily slept through the night.
Emily stopped hiding food in her bedroom.
Emily stopped asking whether Nathan would send her away.
One Saturday morning, they repaired Sarah's locket.
The jeweler offered to replace the entire chain.
Emily shook her head.
“Can you fix the old one?”
