“She told Emily that big girls don't need dead mothers.”
Nathan couldn't speak.
“She said that?”
“Yes.”
“And I didn't know.”
“No.”
“Why didn't you call me?”
“I tried.”
Nathan remembered Vanessa had taken over managing household schedules after they became engaged.
She had access to the shared family email.
His assistants sometimes routed domestic messages through her.
“What happened when she found out?”
“She accused me of undermining your parenting.”
“I never authorized any of this.”
“I know that now.”
“Now?”
“She showed me messages.”
Nathan felt cold.
“What messages?”
“From you.”
Melissa forwarded screenshots.
The sender name said Nathan Cole.
One message read:
Vanessa has full authority regarding Emily. Please stop questioning her decisions.
Another:
Emily needs to detach from some of Sarah's belongings. Vanessa and I agree this is healthier.
Nathan stared at the screen.
He had never written either message.
“Do you still have the originals?”
“Yes.”
“Send everything.”
Five minutes later, Nathan had twenty-three emails.
Most looked legitimate.
His signature.
His style.
Even phrases he often used.
But the sending address was slightly different.
An extra letter hidden in the domain name.
A fake account.
Vanessa had impersonated him.
Nathan contacted his attorney.
Then his brother.
Then the family therapist who had worked with Emily after Sarah's death.
Dr. Rebecca Klein listened quietly.
When Nathan finished, she asked one question.
“When was Emily's last appointment with me?”
“Maybe eight months ago?”
“Eleven.”
Nathan frowned.
“No. Vanessa has been taking her.”
“No.”
Nathan stared at the phone.
“What do you mean?”
“Vanessa canceled every session.”
His stomach dropped.
“She told me Emily was still seeing you.”
“She isn't.”
“Why didn't you call?”
“I did.”
Nathan looked at his missed voicemail archive.
Nothing.
“Who answered?”
“Vanessa.”
Rebecca continued.
“She said you both believed therapy was keeping Emily attached to grief.”
“I never said that.”
“I suspected that later.”
“Why?”
“Because Sarah and I worked together before she died.”
Nathan sat straighter.
“What?”
“She asked me something unusual during her final months.”
“What?”
“She asked what would happen psychologically if adults pressured Emily to transfer the word Mom to another woman.”
Nathan stared at the wall.
“Why would Sarah ask that?”
