Doctors.

Food.

A beautiful home.

He had been wrong.

Sometimes protecting a child means believing the thing you desperately wish isn't true.

It means noticing when behavior changes.

It means asking why.

It means refusing to preserve adult relationships at the cost of a child's sense of safety.

And sometimes it means standing in front of two hundred guests in a wedding suit and saying:

No.

Emily placed the photographs back inside the box.

“Can we throw this album away?”

Nathan considered it.

“Do you want to?”

She nodded.

Then paused.

“Actually…”

She removed the photograph of herself wearing Sarah's locket.

“Keep this one.”

Nathan smiled.

“Okay.”

They threw away the rest.

The empty arch.

The flowers.

The decorations.

The photographs of a future that never happened.

Emily taped her picture above her desk.

Years passed.

The locket remained.

Nathan eventually dated again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The first woman he introduced to Emily was named Julia.

On their third family dinner, Emily mentioned Sarah.

Nathan automatically watched Julia's face.

Julia smiled.

“What was your mom like?”

Emily talked for twenty minutes.

Julia listened.

No tension.

No competition.

No attempt to redirect.

Later, when Emily went upstairs, Julia noticed Nathan staring.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You're being weird.”

Nathan laughed.

“Sorry.”

Julia looked toward the staircase.

“She seems like a great kid.”

“She is.”

“And you still love her mom.”

Nathan's smile disappeared slightly.

Julia continued.

“That's okay.”

He stared at her.

She shrugged.

“She died. You didn't break up.”

Nathan almost laughed.

Nobody had ever said it so simply.

Julia never asked Emily to call her anything.

Never moved Sarah's photographs.

Never questioned the locket.

When Nathan eventually proposed, he asked Emily before buying the ring.

Not permission.

He didn't make his daughter responsible for his adult life.

He simply asked:

“How do you feel?”

Emily was fifteen.

She rolled her eyes.

“Dad, Julia has been here for five years.”

“I know.”

“You're incredibly slow.”

“So that's a yes?”

“That is a please stop being embarrassing and marry her.”

The wedding was small.
