The birthday picture.

Rachel sent it to Marcus a few days after the party.

He stared at it for a long time.

Caleb was laughing.

Zoe was holding Amara’s hand.

Amara looked uncertain but happy.

Marcus stood behind them.

Vanessa’s eyes were not on the camera.

They were on Amara.

Marcus printed the photograph.

He placed it in the living room.

Vanessa noticed.

She said nothing.

Months passed.

Something else changed too.

Marcus became more honest about his own mistakes.

He had been so determined to avoid conflict between Vanessa and Danielle that he sometimes made Amara responsible for adapting.

He had assumed that because Vanessa never openly mistreated her, everything was fine.

He had accepted phrases like “it’s okay” from his daughter without asking whether they were true.

He stopped doing that.

One Saturday, Vanessa planned a trip to the mountains.

At dinner she said, “I found a cabin for spring break.”

Amara looked up.

“What week?”

Vanessa answered.

Amara frowned.

“I’m supposed to be at Mom’s that week.”

Vanessa paused.

Months earlier, her first reaction would have been frustration.

Now she said, “Okay. I’ll look at another week.”

Amara blinked.

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because it isn’t our family vacation if you’re supposed to be there and we schedule it when you can’t come.”

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

She did not look at him.

She was speaking only to Amara.

The girl smiled.

“Okay.”

Vanessa picked up her phone.

“We’ll find another cabin.”

That moment meant more to Amara than any apology.

A year after Caleb’s birthday, another party arrived.

Zoe turned seven.

The house filled with decorations again.

Family members came.

Children ran through the yard.

Cake covered the kitchen counter.

At some point, Rachel lifted her phone.

“Family picture.”

Everyone groaned.

Vanessa laughed.

“Come on.”

Marcus stepped beside her.

Caleb moved forward.

Zoe stood in the middle.

Amara remained near the table talking to a cousin.

Vanessa looked around.

“Where’s Amara?”

Marcus noticed immediately.

So did Amara.

Vanessa called across the room.

“Amara, family picture!”

Amara turned.

For one brief second, she hesitated.

Maybe remembering the year before.

Then she smiled.

“I’m coming.”

She moved beside Caleb.

Vanessa adjusted Zoe’s hair.

Rachel raised the phone.

“Everybody ready?”

Marcus looked at his wife.

Vanessa looked at him.

They both understood what this moment meant.

Rachel took the picture.

Later that night, Amara found Vanessa in the kitchen packing leftovers.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes?”

Amara held her phone.

“I want to show you something.”

She pulled up two pictures.

The first was from Caleb’s birthday the previous year.
