Marcus told Amara to get ready.
Vanessa looked confused.
“She’s coming?”
Marcus frowned.
“Why wouldn’t she?”
“I thought it was just us taking Caleb and Zoe.”
“She’s here this weekend.”
“I know.”
Marcus stared at her.
Vanessa quickly corrected herself.
“I just thought she might think it was boring.”
Amara appeared at the top of the staircase.
“I like museums.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Then get your shoes.”
The day went well.
Marcus forgot the conversation.
Months later, Vanessa planned professional family portraits.
She bought matching outfits for herself, Marcus, Caleb, and Zoe.
The evening before the session, Marcus noticed nothing had been purchased for Amara.
“What is she wearing tomorrow?”
Vanessa paused.
“Who?”
Marcus stared at her.
“Amara.”
“Oh.”
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“I thought she was with Danielle this weekend.”
“No.”
“You said she was.”
“I said Danielle wanted Sunday night.”
Vanessa checked her phone.
“I must have misunderstood.”
“Okay.”
Marcus looked toward the matching outfits hanging from the closet door.
“So what is Amara wearing?”
“I don’t know.”
“We need something that matches.”
“Marcus, the session is tomorrow morning.”
“That’s why I’m asking.”
Vanessa exhaled.
“I’ll figure it out.”
Amara eventually wore a dress they already owned.
It was not the same shade as the others.
The pictures still looked beautiful.
But when Vanessa posted them online, the first photo featured only Marcus, Vanessa, Caleb, and Zoe.
The photograph including Amara appeared sixth.
Marcus noticed.
He told himself he was being sensitive.
Danielle noticed too.
She said nothing until Amara mentioned something several weeks later.
“Vanessa calls Caleb and Zoe her family.”
Danielle looked at her daughter.
“She does?”
Amara nodded.
“Sometimes.”
“What does she call you?”
Amara shrugged.
“Marcus’s daughter.”
Danielle’s expression changed.
“Does she treat you badly?”
“No.”
“Does she say mean things?”
“No.”
“Do you feel comfortable there?”
Amara thought.
“Mostly.”
Danielle wanted to call Marcus immediately.
She did not.
She knew the danger of interpreting every uncomfortable stepfamily moment as cruelty.
Blended families were complicated.
Children noticed language adults considered harmless.
So Danielle waited.
Unfortunately, Marcus waited too.
He was not completely blind.
He noticed that Vanessa treated Amara differently.
But the difference was subtle enough to explain away.
Vanessa did not yell at her.
She did not insult her.
She did not refuse to care for her.
She cooked meals for her.
Bought birthday gifts.
Helped with homework when needed.
If Amara got sick, Vanessa brought medicine.
From the outside, nothing looked cruel.
