“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re being weird.”
Marcus smiled.
“I’m your father. That’s my job.”
Later that evening, he mentioned the comment to Vanessa.
She became quiet.
“I remember.”
Marcus knew exactly what she meant.
The birthday picture.
Who stays in the frame.
Who gets pushed outside it.
Three years after that birthday party, the family traveled to the North Carolina mountains.
The trip had been planned around everyone’s schedule.
Even Danielle’s.
They rented a cabin overlooking a valley.
On their final evening, the sunset turned the sky orange and pink.
Amara set her camera on a small tripod.
“Come here.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“Picture.”
Caleb complained.
Zoe complained louder.
Vanessa laughed.
“Now you know how I feel.”
Amara set the timer.
Everyone moved together.
Marcus stood beside Vanessa.
Caleb and Zoe squeezed into the middle.
Amara checked the frame.
Then began walking toward them.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Wait.”
Amara stopped.
For one second, an old feeling flashed across her face.
Vanessa noticed.
She smiled.
“You’re too far away.”
Vanessa reached out her hand.
“Come closer.”
Amara laughed.
She stepped into the space beside Vanessa.
The camera timer blinked.
Ten seconds.
Nine.
Eight.
Marcus looked around at his family.
Not a perfect family.
Not a simple family.
A family built across two households, an old marriage, a new marriage, mistakes, apologies, boundaries, therapy, and years of learning what belonging actually required.
Seven.
Six.
Amara leaned toward Vanessa.
Caleb made a ridiculous face.
Zoe complained.
“Stop!”
Five.
Four.
Marcus laughed.
Three.
Vanessa put one arm around Amara and the other around Zoe.
Two.
One.
The shutter clicked.
Amara ran toward the camera.
Everyone waited.
She looked at the screen.
Marcus called, “Good?”
Amara smiled.
“Perfect.”
Caleb ran over.
“You always say that.”
“Because I’m talented.”
“You use automatic mode.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
Everyone laughed.
Vanessa walked toward the camera.
Amara showed her the photograph.
Five people filled the frame.
Nobody at the edge.
Nobody separated.
Nobody missing.
Vanessa stared at it for several seconds.
