"It means the bridge is never coming back, Brenda," I smiled.
Over the next three weeks, I hired Tommy and his crew to help me bulldoze and grade a beautiful, private gravel driveway out the back of my property, connecting directly to the main county highway. I didn't have to deal with Oak Creek Estates, their speed bumps, or their Tuscan aesthetic nonsense ever again.
The fallout for the HOA was catastrophic.
The county fines for the illegal gate and the environmental violations topped out at over $25,000. Because the HOA board, spearheaded by Brenda, had acted without consulting a lawyer or getting a permit, the community's insurance refused to cover the cost. The HOA had to levy an emergency special assessment, forcing every homeowner in Oak Creek Estates to cough up an extra $600.
The neighborhood revolted. A special meeting was held, and Brenda Carmichael was ousted as HOA president in a nearly unanimous vote of no confidence. Greg Tolson resigned before they could fire him.
The county forced the HOA to spend an additional $8,000 to hire a demolition crew to jackhammer the concrete pillars out of the mud and remove the iron gate. To add insult to injury, because the road now ended at a sheer drop-off into a creek, the county forced the HOA to install an ugly, industrial-grade steel guardrail at the end of Sycamore Drive, complete with bright yellow flashing hazard lights that blinked 24/7. It completely ruined the view from Brenda's back balcony.
As for my grandfather's bridge, I didn't let it go to waste.
Using my excavator, I dragged the massive steel I-beams up the hill on my side of the creek. I bolted them together vertically, standing them straight up in the air like a massive, rusted steel monument. I even draped the old chains and some of the broken timber over it.
I registered it with the county as a piece of abstract private art. It sits right on the edge of the creek, perfectly framed by the trees, completely legal, and entirely unremovable.
And the best part? It's the very first thing Brenda Carmichael sees every single time she looks out her kitchen window.
Sometimes the best way to win a war isn't to fight the enemy on their terms; it's to completely remove the battlefield. Brenda thought she could use her HOA power to trap me, but she learned the hard way that you can't enforce invisible borders on a man who owns his own heavy machinery.
