Three months passed. Summer bled into a wet, miserable autumn. The letters stopped, and I assumed Brenda had finally found some other poor homeowner to terrorize over the wrong shade of driveway gravel.

I work as an independent heavy machinery contractor, mostly doing land clearing and foundation work. In late October, I took a lucrative job two states over, prepping a massive commercial lot. I was gone for eight days. Eight days of backbreaking labor, sleeping in cheap motels, and eating drive-thru food. All I wanted was to get home, take a hot shower, and sleep in my own bed.

I pulled my heavy F-350 onto Sycamore Drive just past midnight on a Friday. The rain was coming down in sheets, drumming heavily against my windshield. I turned the final corner toward my property, hit my high beams, and slammed on the brakes.

My tires skidded on the wet asphalt, stopping just inches from a massive, eight-foot-tall wrought iron gate.

I sat there in the cab, the engine idling, my brain struggling to process what I was looking at. Right at the entrance of my bridge, completely blocking access, was a heavy-duty security gate. It was bolted into two thick concrete pillars: one pillar was poured on the very edge of the HOA's asphalt, and the other was anchored directly into the dirt bank on my side of the property line. Welded to the center of the gate was an electronic keypad and a heavy, weatherproof padlock.

I grabbed a flashlight, threw on my rain slicker, and stepped out into the freezing downpour. Zip-tied to the iron bars was a laminated notice:

NOTICE OF RESTRICTED ACCESS. This access point has been secured by the Oak Creek Estates Homeowners Association for community safety. To obtain a gate remote and keypad code, the property owner must settle all outstanding fines plus the cost of gate installation. Current balance: $15,420. Contact Brenda Carmichael.

My blood turned to ice. They had literally walled me out of my own home.

I immediately pulled out my phone and dialed the police. Twenty minutes later, a cruiser rolled up, its red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. Officer Jenkins, a guy I vaguely knew from around town, stepped out. He looked at the gate, read the sign, and then looked at me, shaking his head.

"Noah, this is a mess," Jenkins sighed, rain dripping from the brim of his hat.

"It's trespassing and illegal enclosure!" I barked. "They poured concrete on my property line, and they've blocked my only access to my home! I want you to go to Brenda Carmichael's house right now and arrest her, or I swear to God, I am going to hook a logging chain to this thing and rip it out with my truck!"

Jenkins held up his hands defensively. "Noah, don't do that. If you damage this gate, I'm going to have to arrest you for destruction of private property. Brenda preemptively filed a police report this morning claiming this gate is entirely on HOA property to secure a dangerous precipice because the boundary is in dispute. This is a civil matter. I can't intervene without a judge's order."
