Hesper didn't move. She let go of Dashiell's hand, though, and I saw her do it, saw her decide to. "I'll come home in an hour," she said. "I want to tell Mrs. Gilchrist the rest. She deserves to know. And I don't want to tell it in our house."
For a long moment I thought Ottoline was going to fight. I thought she was going to cross the kitchen and take her daughter by the arm. I saw it go through her body, the impulse to. And then I saw her stop it. I saw her put it away somewhere, the way she'd put the ducks in a plastic bag rather than carry them crumpled. She picked up the folio. She picked up the sandwich bag, after a second's hesitation, and slid it back into her blazer.
"One hour," she said. And she walked out of my house, and Radhika followed her with an apologetic look over her shoulder, and the front door closed behind them softly. Ottoline Vandersloot does not slam doors either.
The three of us stood in my kitchen. Pickle, who had slept through the entire thing under the table, chose that moment to get up and stretch and walk over to Hesper and lean her whole body weight against Hesper's shins, the way she does with people she knows.
I looked at the dog. I looked at Hesper. "She knows you," I said.
"Tuesday nights," Hesper said, and for the first time all morning she almost smiled. "She likes to sit on my feet while I do physics."
I made toast. I didn't know what else to do, and toast is what you make. I made toast and I poured orange juice and I sat the two of them down at the table, side by side, across from me, and I said, "Start at the beginning. And don't skip the parts you think will make me mad."
So they started at the beginning.
