And she sat down.

There was a silence. I could feel the room, all ninety-odd households of it, balanced on a fence rail, waiting to see which way it would tip. And I knew it was my turn, because I had promised Dashiell, and because it had been my turn for five years.

I stood up in the fourth row. My knees were shaking. I am a woman who has started IVs on toddlers at three in the morning, and my knees were shaking in a clubhouse in Sunbury, Ohio.

"Most of you know me," I said. "Sela Gilchrist, 9 Foxglove. Five years ago I ran against Ottoline for this seat and lost, and on the night of the candidates' forum, on the porch right outside that door, I said that she would fine her own kid for breathing, and that her daughter would grow up thinking love was a list of violations. Some of you were there. Some of you laughed. Some of you, I'd guess, repeated it." I looked around. A few people looked at their shoes. "It was a cruel thing to say about a mother, and an even crueler thing to say about a twelve-year-old, and I didn't know she was sitting on the steps and heard it. That's not an excuse. I should never have said it whether she was there or not. I said it because it got a laugh. And I've watched that kind of thing get a laugh in this neighborhood, in that Facebook group, every week since. Somebody called her the HOA Karen on Saturday, and seventeen people liked it. I've used the word myself, at my own kitchen table, where my son could hear it. And I want to say, in front of all of you: it was wrong when I did it, and it's wrong when anyone does it. I'm sorry, Ottoline. I'm sorry, Hesper."

I sat down. I didn't feel noble. I felt like I'd taken off a backpack I'd been carrying so long I'd stopped noticing its weight, and now my shoulders didn't know what to do.

Then Hesper stood up.

She didn't go to the front. She stood right where she was, on the left side, with her index card in her hand, and her braid over her shoulder, and Dashiell beside her looking up at her like she'd hung the moon, which, I suppose, in his estimation, she had.

"I'm Hesper Vandersloot," she said. "I'm seventeen. I'm the daughter. I'm also the one who held the bag, in the footage, if anyone's seen it. I was on the other side of the fence. You can't see me, but I was there." She glanced at the card, then didn't look at it again. "I want to say two things. The first one is that Dashiell Gilchrist is my boyfriend, and has been for a year and a half, and the reason nobody knew is because I asked him not to tell anyone, and he didn't, even when he got accused of stealing. He kept his promise when it was really, really expensive to keep. So if anybody in this room is still talking about him like he did something, you can stop."
