"She hasn't told anyone but Dash. And me, an hour ago. I won't tell anyone."

"You'll tell someone," Ottoline said, not unkindly, just tiredly. "People always tell someone. You told three people on the clubhouse porch what you thought of me as a mother."

"I did," I said. "And it was cruel, and it was wrong, and it was mostly not even true, and I've been sorry for five years. I wrote you a note. I don't know if you ever read it."

"I read it," she said. "I read it so many times the creases tore."

That surprised me so much I didn't say anything for a moment.

"I didn't answer it," she said, "because you were right. Part of it. That's what I couldn't stand. Not that you said it. That I'd heard it in my own head already, in Bartholomew's voice, a hundred times. You just said it in yours. Out loud. Where she could hear." She touched the edge of the gray wool skirt, straightening it on its hanger, though it didn't need straightening. "After he left I thought, if I can just keep everything in order. If I can just keep every single thing in order, the yard and the house and the neighborhood and her grades and her phone and her schedule, then nothing else can fall apart. Nothing else will leave. So I made the lists. And I made them longer. And I checked her phone every night, not because I thought she was doing anything, but because it was a thing I could check. Do you understand? It was something I could check off."

"I understand," I said. And I did, more than I wanted to. I'm a nurse. My whole job is lists. I know what it's like to cling to one because the alternative is admitting how much is out of your hands.

"And she was doing the laundry with your son," Ottoline said. "Over the fence. In the dark. Because she was afraid to tell me the dryer was broken. No, that's not right. Because she knew I already knew the dryer was broken and I was too proud to fix it. She was protecting me. She's seventeen, and she was protecting me."
