One of the officers approached me. "Are you the homeowner?"
"Yes, Daniel Davison. That's my generator they're trying to take."
"They have a work order from the HOA saying it's an unauthorized installation."
"It's absolutely authorized. I have the approval documents in my house. Can I get them?"
"Please do."
I went inside and grabbed my file, bringing out the original approval letter, my installation permits from the city, and every other piece of documentation I had. The officer reviewed them carefully.
"These look legitimate to me," he said. He turned to Patricia. "Ma'am, can you explain why you're trying to remove equipment that was properly approved?"
"The approval expired," Patricia said. "Homeowners must resubmit for approval every two years."
"Do you have documentation of that requirement?"
"It's in our bylaws."
"I'm going to need to see that."
Patricia shifted uncomfortably. "I don't have them with me."
