"Is this Daniel Davison?" a woman's voice asked, professional and clipped.
"Yes, who's calling?"
"This is Detective Sarah Chen with the Phoenix Police Department Financial Crimes Unit. I need to speak with you about some allegations that have been made."
My stomach dropped. "What kind of allegations?"
"I'd prefer to discuss this in person. Are you available tomorrow morning at 9:00?"
"Yes, of course. What is this about?"
"I'll explain everything tomorrow. Please bring any documentation you have regarding your interactions with Sunset Ridge HOA."
I barely slept that night, running through every possible scenario. What could Patricia have accused me of? Had she somehow fabricated evidence of wrongdoing?
The next morning, I arrived at the police station with two thick folders of documentation. Detective Chen was a no-nonsense woman in her 40s with sharp eyes and a firm handshake.
"Thank you for coming in, Mr. Davison. I want to assure you first that you're not under investigation, but allegations have been made that I need to follow up on."
"What allegations?"
"Patricia Newman filed a complaint claiming that you accepted bribes in your capacity as a city electrical inspector to approve substandard work. She also claims you threatened her and engaged in voter fraud during the recall election."
