I was stunned. "That's completely false. All of it."
"I figured as much, but I have to investigate. Can you tell me your side of the story?"
I spent the next hour walking Detective Chen through everything that had happened, from the power outage to the attempted generator theft to the recall election. I showed her every document, every email, every piece of evidence I had. Detective Chen took notes, asked questions, and recorded our conversation with my permission.
When I finished, she sat back and shook her head. "This is one of the more elaborate cases of harassment I've seen. And filing a false police report is a crime in itself."
"She filed a false report?"
"If what you're telling me is true, and the evidence supports it, then yes. Making false allegations to law enforcement is a serious offense." She paused. "Mr. Davison, I need to ask you something: do you want to pursue charges against Ms. Newman?"
I thought about it. Part of me just wanted this whole nightmare to be over, but another part of me knew that if Patricia wasn't held accountable, she'd just do this to someone else. "What would charges look like?"
"Based on what you've shown me, we could potentially charge her with filing a false police report, harassment, and possibly attempted theft for the generator incident. The Attorney General's office is also interested in the HOA fraud aspects. This could result in criminal charges and civil penalties."
"I don't want to ruin her life. I just want her to stop."
"I understand, but people like Ms. Newman don't stop unless there are consequences. Let me finish my investigation, and then we can discuss options."
Detective Chen's investigation took two weeks. She interviewed everyone involved, reviewed all the documents, and even pulled records from the city inspection office to verify that I'd never been involved in any improper conduct. When she called me back in, she had another detective with her.
