How to Clean a Mattress at Home Effectively

After a period of use, a mattress can accumulate a large amount of dust, sweat, and other residues. These not only cause unpleasant odors but also create an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. Regularly changing bed sheets, mattress covers, pillowcases, and blankets is essential. However, the mattress itself is often difficult to clean thoroughly.
Many people place their mattresses under direct sunlight to help kill bacteria. While this method can be helpful, it cannot completely remove dust and deep-seated dirt embedded in the mattress. Below are effective ways to clean a mattress at home.
Change Mattress Covers Regularly
To keep your mattress clean, you should frequently change the mattress cover, bed sheets, pillowcases, and blankets. This helps prevent dirt, sweat, and bacteria from accumulating on the mattress surface.
Clean the Mattress Surface
Each time you remove the sheets or mattress cover, use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the surface, as well as from seams, crevices, and stitched areas of the mattress.
For common surface stains, mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid with clean water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray it directly onto the stain and let it sit for at least 5–10 minutes. Then, use a clean cloth to blot the area repeatedly, absorbing excess moisture and lifting the stain.
For more stubborn stains, hydrogen peroxide can be used carefully to help break them down.
If you do not have a vacuum cleaner, you can use a broom or soft brush to remove surface dust. However, a vacuum cleaner is more effective and requires less effort.
Use Baking Soda to Clean and Deodorize the Mattress
Baking soda is highly effective at absorbing moisture and neutralizing odors. Sprinkle baking soda evenly over the entire surface of the mattress. Leave it on for several hours or overnight to allow it to absorb moisture, dirt particles, and odors trapped in the mattress.
Afterward, use a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove all the baking soda from the mattress surface.
Do not forget to flip the mattress over and repeat the same cleaning process on the underside.
Cleaning Frequency and Storage Tips
Ideally, a mattress should be cleaned every 3–6 months. If the mattress will not be used for an extended period, wrap it tightly in a specialized plastic cover to protect it from dust and moisture.
