That evening, I heard tires on gravel and checked the front feed. Not an HOA SUV this time: county brown and gold. Deputy Mark Howard stepped out, hat tucked under his arm, face set in the blankness of a man who knows everyone's business and is determined not to show it.
"Evening, Mr. Reed," he said when I met him at the road gate.
"Deputy."
"Got a couple of calls," he said mildly. "Concerns about access, potential confrontations... you know how it goes."
"I do," I said. "Got documentation you might like even more than I do."
He smiled with his eyes. "I'm sure. For now, just checking in. Everyone staying civil?"
"As civil as people can be while trying to conscript private property," I said.
He nodded. "Keep your logs. Call if anyone crosses the line."
We shook hands. He left without inspecting the dock or the boat. Howard's a smart man; he knows the difference between a boundary and a trap, and that knowing it out loud is not always required.
When the taillights disappeared, the cove fell quiet again. The moon rose fat and satisfied. Across the water, a single porch light clicked on in a beige house with perfect shingles and an HOA-approved soul. A silhouette moved behind the curtains. It looked suspiciously like a woman holding up a phone to film the night.
"She didn't retreat," I said to the water. "She regrouped."
And that was fine. I was regrouped, too.
The plan didn't start with revenge. It started with maintenance. That's what I told myself, anyway, as I sat cross-legged in the boathouse surrounded by wires, toolboxes, and the faint metallic smell of lake water drying on aluminum. Ghost sat on her trailer like a panther waiting for release: matte-black fiberglass, a clean sweep of engineering and obsession.
She was my peace project. Some guys garden after retirement; I built something that could outrun it. Originally, Ghost was meant for quiet mornings: fishing, drifting, watching the fog lift from the far banks. But like every good machine, she had potential.
The onboard computer I'd built from scratch had more processing power than my first deployment laptop: GPS lock, remote diagnostics, encrypted access. Then, after the first trespassing incident, I added something extra: loop mode.
