"She is dangerous," Veronica snapped. "Or have you forgotten what she did to Ryan and the others?"
"She defended herself against three guys who were trying to intimidate her," Bridget countered. "That doesn't make her family criminals."
"You don't know what I know," Veronica insisted.
"Maybe not," Bridget admitted. "But I know what you're planning for the assembly, and I can't be part of it." She hesitated, then added, "Neither can most of the others. They're scared of what might happen."
"So now you're all abandoning me?" Veronica's voice rose dangerously. "After everything I've done for you?"
"What have you actually done for any of us, Veronica?" Bridget asked quietly. "Made us feel temporarily important by association? Taught us to be cruel to stay in your good graces?" She shook her head. "I'm done. And if you go through with this plan, I'll tell Principal Harrington exactly who's been spreading those rumors."
As Bridget left, Veronica felt her carefully constructed plan crumbling. She leaned against the sink, breathing heavily, panic rising in her chest. Everything was falling apart: her social power, her reputation, her future—all threatened because of one scholarship student who refused to stay in her place.
When the assembly bell rang, Veronica had made a new decision: if her followers wouldn't help her expose Amira, she would do it herself—one final, desperate gambit to reclaim what she was losing.
The auditorium filled quickly, students filing into rows as Principal Harrington prepared to address concerns about recent events on campus. Veronica spotted Amira sitting alone near the back, maintaining the same composed posture she'd shown throughout the escalating chaos.
Before the principal could begin speaking, Bridget approached the stage, asking to address the student body. Harrington, surprised but willing to promote student voice, agreed.
"I have something important to say," Bridget announced, her voice shaking slightly. "There have been rumors circulating about Amira Johnson and her family. I want everyone to know that these rumors were deliberately started by Veronica Taylor after Amira defended herself against bullying."
A collective gasp rippled through the auditorium. All eyes turned to Veronica, who sat frozen in shock. This wasn't part of her plan; this was betrayal on a public scale.
"For years, Veronica has targeted Amira," Bridget continued, gaining confidence. "The paint incident at the party was just one example. When Amira finally stood up for herself, Veronica couldn't handle losing control, so she started spreading lies to turn everyone against Amira."
Principal Harrington stepped forward, clearly trying to regain control of the situation, but the damage was done. Students were whispering, pointing, some even standing to get a better view of Veronica's reaction.
In that moment, something inside Veronica snapped. Years of maintaining perfect control, of carefully crafting her image, of manipulating others for her benefit—all undone in seconds by a former friend's confession.
