William's silence was answer enough.

The next morning, another letter appeared, this time on Amira's desk in first period English, though no one had seen anyone approach her seat. The message was equally cryptic:

Strength without purpose is wasted. Purpose without strength is meaningless. Which are you?

Throughout the day, Amira felt a subtle shift in her awareness—a prickling sensation at the back of her neck that suggested observation. During lunch, she caught a glimpse of someone watching from beyond the school fence: a woman in nondescript clothing whose stance nonetheless marked her as a trained fighter.

After school, Amira didn't go directly home. Instead, she went to the public park, finding a secluded bench where she could sit undisturbed. If she was being watched, let them watch on her terms.

Sure enough, within fifteen minutes, the same woman from the school fence appeared, taking a seat beside her without invitation.

"Amira Johnson," the stranger said, her voice carrying no particular accent. "You've caused quite a stir in certain circles."

"I wasn't aware I had an audience," Amira replied, studying the woman carefully. She was perhaps in her thirties, with the lean, efficient build of someone who trained daily. Nothing about her appearance was remarkable, yet she carried herself with unmistakable confidence.

"You always have an audience," the woman said. "Most people are just watching the wrong performance."

"And what performance are you watching?"

The woman smiled slightly. "The emergence of someone with potential. Raw talent is common enough; discipline can be taught. But the judgment you showed—knowing when to display power and when to withhold it—that's rarer than you might think."

"What do you want from me?" Amira asked directly.

"It's not about what we want," the woman replied. "It's about what you're capable of becoming." She stood, leaving a small carved wooden token on the bench between them. "Your grandfather will explain what this means. The choice remains yours, but remember: choices have consequences."

With that cryptic warning, she walked away, blending effortlessly into a group of passing joggers until Amira could no longer distinguish her from the others.

That evening, Amira placed the wooden token on the kitchen table before her grandfather. His expression remained impassive, but his eyes betrayed recognition.
