"Aren't you going to cry?" Veronica called after her, clearly frustrated by Amira's composure. "Come on, Paint Girl! Give us the tears!"

Amira didn't respond, didn't look back as she made her way through the stunned crowd. Students parted before her, some still snickering, others watching with uncertain expressions. She walked home like that, pink paint drying on her skin and clothes, attracting stares from passing cars.

Her grandfather was still awake when she arrived, sitting in his usual chair. He took in her appearance without comment, his expression revealing nothing.

"She set me up," Amira said, her voice steady despite everything. "They all did."

He nodded once, then disappeared upstairs, returning with towels and a change of clothes. "Clean up," he said gently. "We'll talk after."

In the shower, Amira watched pink paint swirl down the drain, scrubbing until her skin felt raw. The dress was ruined, the memory of the humiliation seared into her mind. Yet something else had awakened inside her: a cold, calculating clarity that hadn't been there before.

By Monday morning, the video of "Paint Girl" had spread throughout Wellington Academy. Students Amira had never spoken to knew her name now, pointing and laughing as she walked through the halls. Some mimicked being splashed with paint when she passed; others simply called out the new nickname that had been assigned to her.

"Hey, Paint Girl! Need an umbrella today?"

"Watch out, she's dripping!"

Through it all, Amira maintained the same outward appearance: head down, glasses on, uniform neat and proper. But something had shifted beneath the surface. She no longer flinched at the taunts or quickened her pace to escape. Instead, she moved with a subtle new confidence that went largely unnoticed amid the mockery.

That evening, she sat in her darkened bedroom watching the video of her humiliation for the twentieth time. The clip had over two thousand views now, with comments ranging from casual cruelty to outright viciousness. She studied it with clinical detachment, her breathing slow and controlled as she mentally calculated distances, angles, and the precise amount of force it would take to break each limb of every person who had laughed.

The door opened without a knock, and her grandfather entered, watching her replay the video again.

"How many times have you watched it?" he asked.

"Enough," Amira replied, her voice eerily calm.

He studied her for a long moment before turning to leave. Instead of offering comfort or outrage, he went to his bedroom and retrieved something from the back of his closet: an old wooden box, simply crafted but beautiful in its way. He brought it to the kitchen table and set it down without explanation before walking away.

Amira followed, drawn by curiosity. The box was familiar; she'd seen it all her life, but had never been allowed to open it. Now it sat before her, clearly an offering. With careful hands, she lifted the lid.
