Mix rice with this and leave it in a corner of the house; mice will run away in terror and never dare to come near again.

Natural Ways to Get Rid of Rats Without Using Toxic Chemicals

If you want to keep rats away from your home without relying on harmful poisons, you can try the simple and affordable methods below. Most of these techniques use common household ingredients, making them easy to apply while reducing risks to people and pets.

1. Killing Rats with Rice and Cement

Prepare a small handful of rice, one tablespoon of cement, and one tablespoon of sesame oil.

First, roast the rice in a pan over low heat, stirring continuously until the grains turn golden and release a pleasant aroma. Transfer the roasted rice into a bowl, add the sesame oil, and mix thoroughly. Next, add the cement and stir well until everything is evenly combined.

Divide the mixture into small portions and place them in areas where rats frequently appear, such as the kitchen, cabinet corners, under the bed, or along walls.

The fragrance of sesame oil and roasted rice will attract rats. After eating, they will feel extremely thirsty. When the cement reacts with water inside their bodies, it hardens and causes severe digestive blockage, eventually leading to death.

2. Eliminating Rats with Baking Soda

Baking soda is not only useful for cooking and household cleaning but is also effective in rat control. When rats consume baking soda, the sodium bicarbonate reacts with stomach acid and produces a large amount of carbon dioxide gas. Rats cannot release this gas, causing paralysis and organ failure.

Simply mix baking soda with flour and a small amount of sugar to make the bait more appealing. Place the mixture in spots where rats often travel or hide.

3. Trapping Rats with Potatoes

Depending on the number of rats in your home, prepare three to five potatoes. You may use sprouted or slightly spoiled potatoes to reduce waste.

Wash the potatoes, boil them until soft, then mash them into a smooth paste. Mix the mashed potatoes with a little cocoa powder or vanilla powder to enhance the aroma.

Divide the mixture onto small plates and place them in areas rats frequently visit, such as kitchen corners or near dining tables. Additionally, place a bowl of water nearby to encourage rats to drink after eating.

When potatoes absorb water, they expand significantly, causing severe digestive damage and eventually killing the rats.

4. Repelling Rats with Vinegar

Soak cotton balls thoroughly in white vinegar and place them under cabinets, beneath sinks, near stove areas, or inside rat holes and gnaw marks.

Rats strongly dislike the sharp smell of vinegar and will flee immediately. Once the scent fades, re-soak the cotton balls to maintain effectiveness. This method is especially useful for preventing rats from returning.

5. Repelling Rats with Soap

Mix soap powder, ground pepper, and leftover cooked rice evenly. Place the mixture in bowls and set them in areas where rats often appear.

The strong and irritating smell alone is enough to drive rats away without requiring them to eat the mixture, making this a simple yet effective deterrent.

Final Notes

While these methods rely on household materials, you should always place them carefully to avoid accidental contact with children or pets. Combining multiple methods and keeping your home clean, sealed, and free of food scraps will significantly improve long-term rat control.
