Ryan didn't reply. He didn't need to. Evan's anger wasn't his burden; it was the consequence of choices Evan had made with Madison.

Later that night, Madison herself tried again, this time through social media. She posted pictures of herself staring out a window with captions about surviving narcissistic abuse and finding strength in starting over. A few of her friends liked the posts, but most of their mutual friends had already unfriended her. The truth had spread too far to be spun.

Ryan scrolled past her words without feeling. He wasn't angry anymore; anger had burned itself out, leaving only clarity.

Madison, meanwhile, was sinking. Claire updated him quietly from the hospital: Madison was still working, but barely. No one wanted to partner with her. No one trusted her. She was left to handle the hardest tasks alone. A once-tight unit now treated her like she wasn't even there.

And yet, the most cutting part wasn't her co-workers; it was the silence at home.

On a Thursday night, nearly two weeks after the truth first came out, she appeared at Ryan's door again. No makeup this time, no defiance, just exhaustion. Her voice cracked as she whispered, "Please, Ryan, just let me in."

Ryan stood in the doorway, steady as stone. "You made your choice, Madison. You can live with it."

Her lip trembled. "You don't understand. I lost everything."

"You lost everything," Ryan said calmly, "because you gambled everything. You thought I was weak. You thought I wouldn't find out, but I did. And now, you don't get to rewrite the story."

She shook her head, tears sliding down her cheeks. "You'll regret this."

"No," Ryan said, his voice quiet but firm. "The only thing I regret is wasting three years on someone who thought loyalty was optional."

With that, he closed the door. Her sobs echoed faintly in the hall, but Ryan didn't open it again.

Days later, he matched with someone new on a dating app—a woman named Lily: warm and kind, who laughed easily and asked about his life without judgment. They planned coffee for Saturday morning. Ryan wasn't rushing into anything; he knew healing took time. But for the first time in months, the future felt possible.

As he meal-prepped in his now quiet apartment, Ryan allowed himself a rare smile. Madison had wanted excitement, a thrill at any cost. She got it, and it destroyed her. He, on the other hand, had something she would never have again: peace.

And that was the sweetest revenge of all.
