Corrigan's eyes tracked from Tobias to the Tesla, then back again. Something in his expression shifted in the way a lock settles when a wrong key is pressed. He looked at the briefcase. He looked at the house. He looked at Tobias Caldwell standing on the steps of the $9 million estate, and every assumption he had ever made about who belonged in this neighborhood told him the same thing."You own it?" Corrigan repeated, the skepticism in his voice as naked as a slur."That is what I said," Tobias replied. He had not moved from the step."I'm going to need to see some ID and the documentation for this property, because a man matching your description was reported in this area last week looking suspicious."There had been no such report. Tobias knew it. More importantly, Tobias had the kind of brain that cataloged false statements the way other people catalog music: effortlessly and permanently."Officer," Tobias said, "I don't have the property documentation on me. I have my driver's license, which lists this address, and I have something else I'd like to show you."He reached slowly into the breast pocket of his overcoat and produced a slim black card wallet. He opened it and held it out.Corrigan stepped forward and snatched it.The first thing his eyes landed on was the Connecticut driver's license. The address read: 221 Ridgecrest Drive, Westport. He noted it without letting it register. His eyes slid to the second card, the one on the other side of the wallet, and paused. It was a federal access credential, matte black with a gold eagle embossed in the corner. Below the eagle, in clean white text:Department of Homeland SecurityClearance Level: TS/SCITobias Rain Caldwell
