Corrigan's lips moved, but nothing came out.Two agents stepped forward. His service weapon was drawn from its holster. His belt was stripped. His hands were zip-tied behind his back, and the sound of the ties cinching tight was the loudest thing on Ridgecrest Drive.He looked at Tobias with the wild, searching eyes of a man who has just watched the floor fall out from under everything he understood about the world. "I was just..." he started."Doing your job?" Tobias said quietly. His tone held no heat; it was simply the application of a fact to a surface that couldn't hold it. "You weren't doing your job. You were doing your prejudice. There's a significant difference."He turned and walked up the two remaining steps to his front door.The lights of Westport Police Department cruisers were visible at the end of Ridgecrest Drive now, drawn by Corrigan's original dispatch call. They had hit the federal perimeter at the bottom of the block and stopped. An agent stood at the tape line with her hand raised, and the local units sat idle, locked out entirely from a scene that was no longer theirs.Corrigan's sergeant, a thick-necked man named Gerald Bauer who had covered for Corrigan twice and quietly made three civilian complaints disappear, stepped out of the first cruiser and walked to the tape."I need access to this scene," Bauer said. "That's my officer up there."The agent at the perimeter looked at him without expression. "This is a federal operation, Sergeant. Your officer is in DHS custody. You will receive a written notification of charges within the hour."Bauer stood at the tape with his hands on his hips, watching as Corrigan was guided toward one of the black Suburbans. The back door opened. Corrigan was placed inside. The door shut.
