"You knew it then too. You just preferred your version of my life to my actual life."

Julian had no answer that was not another form of agreement. Camille let the silence work. Silence, she was learning, could be a tool instead of a wound if you held it on purpose.

In the late afternoon Camille drove to the hotel without telling Julian. Room 214 smelled like bleach and old carpet. Isaiah opened the door in a clean shirt that still looked borrowed. Surprise and fear fought on his face.

"I am not here to hug you," Camille said.

"I know."

She came in and sat on the chair by the window. He sat on the edge of the bed, leaving space like a man who understood walls.

"Tell me about the year," she said. "Not the slogans. The days."

So he did. Day one in a church basement chair that wobbled. Day nineteen when he almost called her and called Julian instead. Day forty-seven when he worked a dishwashing shift and washed the same plate three times because his hands needed a ritual. Day one hundred two when he walked past a liquor store and kept walking and then sat on a curb and shook. Day two hundred when Julian met him at a park and told him, voice hard, that Camille had spent the morning crying because a song in a drugstore sounded like their childhood. Day three hundred when Isaiah stood outside a different cemetery in a different city and apologized to a stranger's stone because he could not face his own. Day three hundred sixty-four on her porch with his heart trying to exit through his mouth.

Camille listened without softening. Listening was not forgiveness. Listening was information.

"You made Julian lie to me," she said.

"Yes."

"You used his love for me as a shield."

"Yes."

"If you relapse, I will not bury you again. I will also not pretend the relapse is my failure. Do you understand the difference?"

Isaiah's eyes filled. "Yes."

"Good. Then understand this too. I am angry enough to set this whole story on fire. I am also not ready to lose you a second time now that the first loss turned out to be a lie. Those feelings are going to fight in me for a long time. You do not get to referee them."
