"We will see," Camille said. "Ordinary used to include telling me the truth. We are relearning the definition."

Two days later Camille drove her mother, Evelyn Brooks, to a quiet park with a pond where ducks argued over nothing. She did not bring Julian. She did not bring Isaiah. She brought coffee in a thermos and a courage that kept slipping.

Evelyn was seventy-one, sharp-eyed, still wearing mourning in small ways — a brooch that had been Isaiah's baby pin, a habit of checking her phone as if the dead might text. Camille watched her mother feed the ducks and felt the words stack up behind her teeth.

"Mama," she said. "I need you to sit on the bench and not stand up until I finish."

Evelyn sat. "You are scaring me."

"Isaiah is alive."

The air left Evelyn's body in a sound Camille would remember forever. Camille held her mother's hands and told the story without decorations: crash, survival, disappearance, year of secret messages, porch, hotel, the second phone in Julian's jacket, the marriage now cracked open on the kitchen floor of their house.

Evelyn shook. She asked the same questions twice. She cursed Isaiah. She cursed Julian. She cursed the hospital and God and the winter roads. Then she asked where her son was, and Camille told her the hotel name, and Evelyn stood up anyway because no bench can hold that kind of news forever.

"I want to see him," Evelyn said.

"I know. Not alone the first time. And not today if today is only shock. He does not get to be caught by your softest hour just because he counted to three hundred sixty-four."

Evelyn stared at the pond. "I buried my child."

"I know."

"I talked to dirt."

"I know."

"And Julian knew."

Camille's jaw tightened. "Yes."
