Evelyn closed her eyes. "I raised that boy to tell the truth. Both of them, in different ways, failed that lesson."

They sat until the coffee went cold. When Evelyn finally said she was ready to go home, Camille drove her and stayed the night on the couch because leaving felt like abandoning a freshly opened wound. In the dark, Evelyn whispered from the bedroom doorway, "Do you hate them?"

Camille answered honestly. "I hate what they did. I love who they were supposed to be. I do not know yet how to fit those into one house."

Evelyn nodded like that was the only adult answer available.

On the fourth day, Camille allowed a meeting at Evelyn's house. Neutral ground that was not neutral at all. Isaiah arrived clean, shaved, shaking. Julian arrived separate, as instructed. Camille sat where she could see all of them and also the front door.

Evelyn did not hug Isaiah at first. She looked at him the way a person looks at a returned package that might contain a bomb or a letter.

"You let me bury you," she said.

"Yes, Mama."

"You let your sister buy flowers for a lie."

"Yes."

"If you ever disappear like that again, I will find you just to slap you, and then I will find you again to feed you, and you will not get to choose which comes first."

Isaiah cried. Evelyn cried. They did not collapse into an easy embrace that fixed a decade. They sat on opposite ends of the sofa with a cushion of air between them that eventually, slowly, narrowed when Evelyn reached out and gripped his wrist like she was checking for a pulse the funeral had denied her.

Julian stayed quiet until Evelyn turned on him.

"You owed my daughter the truth more than you owed my son his fear."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Do you understand that love without truth is just management?"
