Renee Holloway had not been looking for evidence that her husband was having an affair.

That was the part she would repeat later, first to Marcus, then to their marriage counselor, and eventually to herself whenever memory tried to rewrite the evening into something cleaner than it had been.

She had been looking for a restaurant charge.

Nothing more.

It was a little after nine on a Thursday night in their suburban Atlanta home, and Renee sat at the desk in the small family room wearing an oversized cream sweatshirt and jeans, her laptop open beneath the warm light of a table lamp. Family photographs crowded the corner of the desk: Marcus holding their son Caleb at a Braves game, Renee and their daughter Zoe at a middle-school awards ceremony, all four of them standing ankle-deep in the Gulf during a summer trip to Destin.

The house looked settled.

Loved.

Ordinary.

Marcus was upstairs folding laundry.

Caleb, nine, was asleep.

Fourteen-year-old Zoe was supposed to be reading in her room, although Renee suspected a phone was involved.

Renee had opened the family travel account because a $26.90 charge had appeared on their credit card from a restaurant she did not recognize. Marcus sometimes used the account when traveling between job sites, and the charge itself meant nothing.

Then Renee noticed the recent destinations.

Several places were familiar.

A hardware store.

A client address.

Their dentist.

Caleb’s soccer field.

A sandwich place near Marcus’s office.

Then one name appeared that Renee did not recognize.

Lauren’s.

No business name.

No street name.

Just a person.

Lauren’s.

Renee stared.

She clicked.

The saved address was in Decatur, twenty-seven minutes from their house without traffic.

A townhouse.

Not a restaurant.

Not an office.

Not a store.

Her first thought was embarrassingly harmless.

Maybe Lauren was a client.

Marcus ran project operations for a commercial renovation company. He visited homeowners, designers, architects, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and property managers constantly.

Then Renee saw the visit history.

Three visits.

The first six weeks earlier.

Saturday, 11:14 a.m.

The second three weeks later.

Wednesday, 6:37 p.m.

The third last Sunday.

2:06 p.m.

Renee stopped breathing normally.

Last Sunday Marcus had told her he was taking Zoe to buy new basketball shoes.

They had been gone nearly four hours.

They returned with basketball shoes.

Renee remembered because she complained about the price.

One hundred thirty dollars for shoes a child would outgrow before spring.

Marcus laughed.

Zoe said they were “performance shoes.”

Renee called that “marketing with laces.”

Everyone laughed.

Now she looked at the Sunday destination.

Lauren’s.

2:06 p.m.

She clicked again.

A notification expanded near the bottom of the screen.

Your saved destination: Lauren’s.

Renee’s fingers went cold.

Footsteps moved behind her.

She did not turn.

Marcus entered carrying a white laundry basket filled with folded clothes.

He was forty-three, tall and lean, wearing a navy hoodie and black sweatpants. He had shaved his head for years, and the lamp caught the smooth curve of it as he stepped into the room.

He was halfway toward the sofa when he noticed the screen.

He stopped.

Renee saw his reflection in the dark window.

That was the moment.

Not the address.

Not the three visits.

His face.

Marcus looked at the laptop and became completely still.

The laundry basket shifted slightly in his hands.

A folded towel slid toward one side.

Renee turned slowly.

“Who is Lauren?”

No greeting.

No accusation yet.

Just the question.

Marcus stared at her.

“Renee.”

Her stomach dropped.

People used your name like that when they needed time.

“Who is Lauren?”

Marcus set the laundry basket on the couch.

“Why are you in my travel history?”

Renee laughed once.

The sound scared both of them.

“Really?”

“No.”

He immediately shook his head.

“That came out wrong.”

“Very.”

“I’m asking what happened.”

“I was looking for a restaurant charge.”

She turned the laptop toward him.

“I found this.”

Marcus looked at the screen.

Lauren’s.
