Thomas mentioned quietly that something about that day never sat right with him. He didn't explain further. He just asked Rosie to keep an eye on things in the house, to tell him if she noticed anything unusual. Rosie promised she would, not realizing her own daughter would be the one to find it.
That Friday, as Norine wandered toward the east hallway, humming to herself, Rosie was two rooms away folding towels, completely unaware that her daughter's curiosity was about to crack open a truth the entire household had been standing on top of for two years.
Emily, meanwhile, was pacing near the gala setup, glancing again and again toward that same hallway as if some invisible thread pulled her attention there.
Norine's small fingers found a seam in the wood. They pushed. Something clicked.
A hidden panel shifted inward, revealing a slim metal locker built into the wall, the kind meant to disappear completely from sight. Norine's eyes went wide. She pressed her palm flat against the cold metal and screamed the only word she knew how to scream:
"Mom! Something here!"
The sound cracked through the marble hallway. Rosie dropped the towels and ran. Thomas, hearing the child's cry through his office door, bolted out seconds later. And somewhere from the gala setup, Emily heard it too, and she ran faster than either of them.
"Get her away from there!" Emily's voice came out sharp, almost frantic, as she rounded the corner. "Rosie, get your daughter away from that wall right now!"
Rosie froze at the tone. She had never heard Emily raise her voice like that: not controlled, not polished, just raw panic barely held together.
