The room went silent. Rosie's hand flew to her mouth.

Thomas stared at the image, his entire body rigid. His breath caught somewhere between his chest and his throat. His father hadn't died peacefully in his sleep on his birthday, the way the world had been told. He had died right here, violently, and someone had taken a photograph of it, then hidden the evidence inside these walls for two years.

Thomas's eyes lifted slowly from the photograph to Emily's face. She wasn't crying. She wasn't confused. She was calculating.

"Thomas," Emily whispered, taking a step back. "I can explain."

Rosie pulled Norine tightly against her chest, the child now quiet, sensing the storm crashing through the grown-ups around her.

Thomas said nothing. He just stared at the woman he was supposed to marry in four months: the woman who had found his father's body; the woman who had walked past this hallway a hundred times with fear in her eyes that nobody understood until now.

The mansion felt different that night: colder, like the walls themselves knew a truth too heavy to hold. Thomas locked himself in his study with the photograph, refusing to speak to anyone, including the police he hadn't yet called. Emily paced the guest wing, her phone pressed to her ear, whispering to someone in short, panicked bursts that Rosie caught fragments of through the door as she passed with fresh towels.

Rosie barely slept. She sat beside Norine's bed most of the night, watching her daughter breathe, terrified that whatever truth had just cracked open in that hallway might swallow them both. She hadn't asked for any of this; she just wanted to raise her daughter in peace. Now she was standing at the center of a secret that could destroy a family worth billions.

The next morning, Thomas called Rosie into his study. He looked like he hadn't slept either: eyes hollow, tie loosened, a man carrying two years of grief that had just been rewritten in front of him.
