Judge Rostova looked intrigued despite herself. "Mr. Wright, explain yourself, and make it quick."

"Gladly, Your Honor," Thomas said. He stepped out from behind the desk, walking toward the center of the room. He didn't look like a doddering old paper pusher anymore. There was a sudden, razor-sharp precision to his movements.

"Three years ago," Thomas began, addressing the room, "Harrington Estates was facing a catastrophic liquidity crisis. Mr. Harrington had over-leveraged himself on a massive commercial project in downtown Los Angeles, the Grand Horizon Towers. Traditional banks refused to lend him the capital he needed to finish construction. He was sixty days away from defaulting on his existing loans and losing everything."

Richard shifted uncomfortably in his seat. The memory of that panic was a dark stain on his otherwise pristine ego. It was true. He had almost lost it all, but he had been saved at the last minute by a miracle private equity firm.

"To save his empire," Thomas continued, "Mr. Harrington secured a high-yield rescue loan from a private offshore venture capital firm known as Obsidian Horizon Capital. The loan was for $45 million."

Arthur Penhaligon slammed his hand on the table. "Objection. Relevance. What does a private equity loan have to do with this divorce?"

"I'll allow it," Judge Rostova said, her eyes locked on Thomas. "But you better connect the dots right now, counselor."

"The connection is the prenuptial agreement itself, Your Honor," Thomas said, turning to look directly at Richard. "The very prenup Mr. Harrington is so desperate to enforce states that whatever assets or businesses either party built independently during the marriage remain entirely their own."

"Exactly!" Richard blurted out, unable to contain himself. "Harrington Estates is mine. She gets nothing."

"Mr. Harrington, speak out of turn again and I will hold you in contempt," Judge Rostova warned sharply. She looked back at Thomas. "Continue."

Thomas approached the judge's bench, handing the bailiff the thin manila folder. "Your Honor, I am submitting into evidence the corporate ownership registry for Obsidian Horizon Capital, the firm that loaned Mr. Harrington $45 million."

Richard rolled his eyes, leaning back again. "So what?" he whispered to Chloe. "It's a faceless hedge fund out of Delaware. They saved my ass. I pay them interest. Who cares?"

Chloe nodded in agreement, though a faint look of unease was starting to creep into her eyes as she watched Claire. Claire hadn't moved. She was still sitting perfectly upright, her face a mask of total serenity, watching Richard with the polite, detached interest of a scientist observing a rat in a maze.

Judge Rostova opened the folder. She adjusted her glasses. She looked at the paper. Then she looked up at Claire.

A heavy, profound silence descended over the courtroom. The judge looked back down at the document, flipping to the second page as if to verify she wasn't hallucinating.

"Mr. Penhaligon," Judge Rostova finally said, her voice eerily quiet. "Are you aware of who the sole proprietor and 100% equity owner of Obsidian Horizon Capital is?"

Arthur looked entirely lost. "No, Your Honor. Corporate veils on those offshore VC firms are notoriously thick. We deal with their legal representatives, not the principals."

"Well," the judge said, holding the paper up, "the corporate veil has been lifted. The sole owner and CEO of Obsidian Horizon Capital is Claire Belmont."

For three agonizing seconds, nobody breathed. Then Richard let out a loud, sharp laugh.

"That's a lie," he said. He looked around the courtroom, expecting everyone to join in the joke. "That's a fabricated document. Claire?

Claire owns a private equity firm? She doesn't even know how to balance a checkbook. She sits in her sweatpants reading mystery novels."

Claire slowly stood up. It was the first time she had moved since the proceedings began. She didn't look angry. She didn't look triumphant. She looked utterly, terrifyingly bored.

"I prefer historical nonfiction, Richard," Claire said, her voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of any warmth. "And for the record, I was never reading. I was working."

Arthur Penhaligon snatched a copy of the document from Thomas Wright's hand, his eyes scanning the pages frantically. The color drained from his face at a terrifying speed.

"This... this is a certified federal registry document. But how? How? She has no income history."

"No domestic income history," Thomas corrected cheerfully. "Ms. Belmont is a silent partner and primary financier for several international tech startups and real estate ventures. She started investing with a small inheritance right after college, long before she met Mr. Harrington.

She simply chose to keep a low profile. While Mr. Harrington was busy putting his name on billboards and buying luxury sports cars, Ms. Belmont was quietly compounding her wealth in international markets."

Richard sprang to his feet, his face flushing crimson. "This is a scam. You're telling me my wife is a secret millionaire and she let me pay the mortgage for ten years?"

"Not a millionaire, Mr. Harrington," Thomas corrected gently. "A billionaire. Ms. Belmont's net worth, verified by Forbes' private financial auditors last quarter, is roughly $1.4 billion."

Chloe let out a choked, strangled gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. She stared at the woman in the thrift-store coat. Suddenly, the beige trench coat didn't look so cheap anymore. Suddenly, its pristine stitching and perfect drape screamed of quiet, unfathomable wealth.

"Now," Thomas continued, his voice hardening, "let's return to the prenuptial agreement. Mr. Harrington insisted that whatever is his is his, and whatever is hers is hers. He wanted to ensure that Ms. Belmont could not touch his company."

"Yes," Richard stammered, panic finally piercing his arrogance. "Yes, that's what the contract says."
