Dr. Whitmore intervened.
The family left Hawthorne two months later.
“Why isn’t that case in the materials?” the board chair asked.
Eleanor looked directly at Dr. Whitmore.
“Because the file disappeared.”
Murmurs exploded through the room.
The chair struck the table.
“Order.”
Dr. Whitmore’s attorney stood.
“We object to the characterization.”
Eleanor pulled out a document.
“I have the copy.”
She had made it before leaving Hawthorne.
Attached to it was an email from Dr. Whitmore.
Given the family’s decision to withdraw, retaining unresolved allegations serves no constructive administrative purpose.
Marcus looked at the principal.
For the first time, Dr. Whitmore seemed afraid.
Not irritated.
Not controlled.
Afraid.
The hearing recessed.
People poured into the lobby.
Marcus stood near a drinking fountain while his mother spoke with Rachel Coleman, the attorney reviewing their case.
Someone approached him.
He turned.
Mrs. Gallagher.
One of her lawyers immediately stepped toward her.
“Margaret.”
She lifted a hand.
“I just want thirty seconds.”
Denise saw them and moved toward Marcus.
Marcus shook his head slightly.
He wanted to hear.
Mrs. Gallagher stopped several feet away.
For the first time, she looked directly at his hand.
“I never intended this.”
Marcus almost laughed.
“What part?”
Her face tightened.
“All of it.”
“The video?”
“The spectacle.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Mrs. Gallagher glanced toward the crowded lobby.
“You think I woke up that morning planning to hurt you?”
“I don’t know what you planned.”
“I didn’t.”
Marcus nodded.
“Okay.”
She seemed frustrated by the answer.
“I was angry.”
“I know.”
“You embarrassed me in front of the class.”
“I corrected an answer.”
“You kept pushing.”
“Because you were wrong.”
“There.”
She pointed at him.
“That.”
“What?”
“That tone.”
Marcus stared at her.
Mrs. Gallagher seemed to realize what she had just said.
But instead of stopping, she continued.
“You always had to prove something.”
“So did Noah.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus waited.
“How was it different?”
Her attorney stepped forward.
