The tone did not.
Mrs. Gallagher left.
Dr. Whitmore disappeared into his office.
Marcus sat beside his mother.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Denise whispered, “Did you hit her back?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Did you curse at her?”
“No.”
“Did you touch anybody?”
“No.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Marcus looked at his palm.
“You’re not mad?”
Denise turned toward him.
“At you?”
“I kept arguing with her.”
“Were you wrong?”
“About the answer?”
“About anything.”
Marcus thought.
“No.”
“Then no.”
He looked at her.
“She had reports in my file.”
Denise’s brow furrowed.
“What reports?”
“Three.”
“When?”
“From this month.”
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t know.”
That frightened her more than the ruler.
Marcus saw it instantly.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Mom.”
Denise lowered her voice.
“Schools document things for a reason.”
“Exactly.”
“No. I mean people document things for a reason.”
Marcus understood.
His mother worked in patient administration now, but before Marcus was born, she had spent four years as a records coordinator for a law office.
She knew what paperwork could do.
She knew what a carefully constructed timeline could become.
“Those forms weren’t for you,” she said.
“What do you mean?”
“They were for whoever came after.”
A door opened down the hall.
Dr. Whitmore returned carrying an envelope.
Before he reached them, Marcus’s mother leaned closer.
“From now on, you save everything.”
Marcus nodded.
“Everything.”
Across town, Noah Bennett sat in the passenger seat of his sister’s car.
Claire was twenty-two, finishing her final year at a state university.
She had watched the video twice.
The second time, she had stopped it every few seconds and written down timestamps.
At 8:42, Mrs. Gallagher told Marcus his question was “typical.”
At 9:15, she said he was “always looking for special treatment.”
At 10:03 came the sentence that made Claire’s stomach turn.
“Why don’t you go to a school for black kids?”
At 11:47, Marcus was ordered to hold out his hand.
At 12:21 came the first strike.
At 12:39, Noah stood up.
At 12:52, Mrs. Gallagher threatened his grade.
At 13:18 came the second strike.
At 13:22 came the camera shutter.
At 13:29, Mrs. Gallagher began demanding phones.
The recording continued.
It captured everything after that too.
