She tapped the next one.
“‘Student refused redirection and attempted to challenge instructional authority in front of peers.’”
“That was when she marked my source wrong.”
“And the third?”
Marcus read silently.
Student displayed an increasingly confrontational pattern and may require administrative intervention if behavior continues.
His stomach tightened.
“That was yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“She already wrote that before today.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked up.
“So she was planning something.”
Denise didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said, “Maybe.”
The doorbell rang.
Marcus stood.
Denise stopped him.
“I’ll get it.”
When she opened the door, Noah was standing on the porch with Claire.
Noah looked terrified.
Claire looked determined.
“Mrs. Reed?”
“Yes?”
“My name is Claire Bennett. This is my brother.”
“I know Noah.”
Noah lifted one hand awkwardly.
“Hi.”
Claire held out a flash drive.
“We have something you need to see.”
Twenty minutes later, Denise was crying.
Quietly.
Not during the racial remark.
Not during the threats.
She held herself completely still through those.
It was when the first crack sounded that her face collapsed.
Marcus looked away.
He had survived the moment itself without crying.
Watching his mother hear it was worse.
Claire paused the video.
“I made three copies.”
Denise wiped her face.
“Thank you.”
“The original is untouched. I copied the file directly.”
“Thank you.”
Noah stared at Marcus’s hand.
“I’m sorry I didn’t stand up again.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You did more than anybody.”
“I sat down.”
“Because she threatened you.”
“I should’ve...”
“You recorded it.”
Noah nodded.
Marcus held his gaze.
“That matters.”
Claire closed the laptop.
“There’s something else.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The school emailed parents.”
Denise frowned.
“What?”
Claire opened the message.
It had been sent at 4:17 p.m.
Hawthorne Preparatory Academy is aware of an incident involving a student and faculty member during a classroom disciplinary matter. Portions of the incident may have been recorded without authorization. The school is conducting a full internal review. We strongly caution our community against circulating incomplete or misleading material that could interfere with that process.
Marcus read it twice.
“Incomplete?”
Claire nodded.
“They’re getting ahead of it.”
Denise’s eyes hardened.
Marcus looked at her.
“What do we do?”
She picked up the flash drive.
“We make sure they don’t get to decide what the story is.”
