Pike ended his call and strode back toward the porch. He had heard the warning. "Shaw, those cameras might contain evidence of the burglary. Locate the recording system inside the house."

Shaw moved toward the front door. Maya stepped directly into the doorway. "You're not entering this house." "I've got reasonable suspicion that recording equipment inside contains evidence of criminal activity," Pike declared. "You have no warrant, no exigent circumstances, and no legal authority to enter this property."

Pike's face darkened. "I've got plenty of authority, lady. This is a criminal investigation." "This is a fishing expedition," Maya replied. "And entering that house without a warrant will create a federal problem far larger than the one you already have."

The sound of tires on pavement interrupted the standoff. An unmarked dark sedan stopped behind the patrol cars, and a tall man in his late fifties stepped out. His gray hair was perfectly combed, his white shirt crisp, and lieutenant's bars gleamed on his collar. Warren Keller surveyed the scene with calculating eyes.

He took in the open front door, the paint supplies beside it, the officers spread through the yard, and Pike's posture at the foot of the steps. Then he looked directly at the federal credentials. Recognition appeared and disappeared almost instantly. Keller had been in law enforcement too long not to know the shape, seal, and presentation of genuine federal identification. What changed in his face was not confusion but calculation.

His gaze went from the twins to the officers surrounding the porch and finally to the federal credentials in Maya and Naomi's hands. Recognition flashed across his face. He knew immediately that the badges were genuine. Pike moved to intercept him. "Lieutenant, these women claim to be FBI agents, but I think..."

Keller lifted one hand and silenced Pike. He stepped closer to the porch. "Special Agents Carter. I'm Lieutenant Warren Keller, precinct commander." Maya nodded once.

"We received a call about suspicious activity at this address," Keller said. "My officers responded to investigate. I need to verify that you have legitimate authority to be on this property." Naomi stared at him. "We live here."

"I'll need proof of that claim." Naomi pulled up a digital copy of the property record on her phone. "Property deed, recorded with the county. Current mortgage holder, First National Bank. Property taxes paid through December."

Keller studied the screen. The deed clearly listed the Carter family and matched the address. Pike shifted beside him. "That could be forged too. Digital documents are easy to fake."

Keller straightened. "The ownership documentation appears to be in order. However, given the nature of the initial call and the circumstances of this encounter, I'm declaring this property a temporary investigative scene." Maya's voice sharpened. "On what grounds?"

"Public safety and evidence preservation. Everyone will remain exactly where they are until this investigation is completed to my satisfaction."

Early evening shadows stretched across the Carter property as the sun dropped lower. The confrontation had dragged on for more than an hour, with Maya and Naomi still on the porch while Keller's officers controlled the yard below. The air had grown thick with humidity and tension. Keller paced between his men with the confidence of someone accustomed to reshaping events until they fit the version he preferred.

Pike was visibly more agitated. His eyes kept drifting toward the side of the house, where a small window exposed the red and blue indicator lights of the security system's central hub. Shaw watched him closely enough to catch every small signal. Cole, meanwhile, kept glancing at his own body camera as if he had become newly aware of what it might record. Mercer stayed quieter than all of them, studying the twins, Keller, and Pike in turn.

"I've been thinking about this burglary call," Keller announced. "The neighbor who reported suspicious activity might have been intimidated into changing their story." Maya's jaw tightened. "What are you talking about?"

"Sometimes people who witness crimes get scared when the suspects return to the scene. They might feel pressured to claim nothing happened. That would explain why you're so confident about being here." Naomi stared at him. "You think we intimidated someone into letting us burglarize our own house?"

"Witness intimidation is a serious crime," Keller replied smoothly. "That gives me additional justification for maintaining this investigative scene until we can interview the caller properly." While Keller spoke, Pike kept glancing toward a small side window that revealed part of the home's security equipment. Red and blue indicator lights were visible through the glass. Pike caught Shaw's attention with a subtle nod toward the window. Shaw began drifting along the side of the porch as though his movement were casual.

Naomi tracked him while keeping most of her attention on Keller. "Lieutenant, are you planning to interview this mysterious caller tonight? Because otherwise your justification for holding an investigative scene does not hold up."

Shaw reached the porch steps and began climbing toward the side window. Maya turned and stepped into his path. "Where do you think you're going?" "Checking the perimeter for officer safety."

"You're approaching the window of a private residence without a warrant," Maya said flatly. "Back down those steps." Shaw's face flushed. "Don't tell me how to do my job. I've got reasonable suspicion that..."

Pike suddenly lunged toward Naomi's phone. "Enough of this recording nonsense."

Naomi saw him coming and used her defensive training to redirect the grab without striking him. Pike's own aggressive movement carried him into the wooden porch post, where she briefly controlled him before stepping back and releasing him. Cole shouted from the bottom of the stairs. "Stop. Everyone stop right now."

Shaw started forward to help Pike, but Mercer caught his arm. "Shaw, don't. This is already bad enough."

Naomi immediately raised her open hands. Pike stumbled away from the post, his face scarlet with rage and humiliation. "You just put hands on a police sergeant," he shouted. "You think your federal badges protect you from assaulting an officer? You're going to regret that mistake for the rest of your careers."

Maya moved beside her sister. "The cameras caught everything, Naomi. Every second of it."

Night settled over the Carter property, turning what had begun as an afternoon misunderstanding into something that felt deliberate and endless. Porch lights illuminated the officers in the yard while Pike held one hand against his shoulder and struggled to control his breathing. Keller's expression remained calculating. He understood that every additional minute without legitimate grounds created more evidence of harassment, but Pike's wounded pride made retreat difficult.

Maya raised her phone where Keller could see it. "Lieutenant Keller, I'm contacting my federal supervisors if you don't clear this scene immediately. You have no warrant, no probable cause, and no lawful justification for keeping officers on our property. I can have the FBI duty officer on the line in seconds. Would you like to explain to federal command why local police have spent hours harassing two agents at their family home?"

Keller's jaw tightened. The threat was real, and he knew it. Federal agents had direct access to supervisors who could turn a local incident into a much larger investigation. He looked toward Pike. "Sergeant, we're withdrawing from the scene. Get your men back to the vehicles."

Pike's eyes flashed. "Lieutenant, we haven't finished investigating." "We're finished," Keller cut in. "Move your officers now."

Pike turned toward his men, searching for somewhere to place his anger. His gaze settled on Cole, whose body camera was still visible and recording. "Cole, shut off that camera and get back to your unit."
