Keller moved nearer the steps. "Mr. Carter, let me be clear. Officers respond to calls from concerned neighbors. If you continue filing complaints about legitimate police work, you'll create bigger problems for yourself."

Maya felt her chest tighten. "Dad never told us about this." On the recording, James remained calm. "Lieutenant, I'm recording this conversation for my own protection."

"Your protection?" Keller laughed. "From what?" "From officers who seem to think I don't belong in my own neighborhood."

Pike's voice turned colder. "Maybe you should consider moving somewhere more suitable." The silence that followed was heavy. James stood straighter and refused to back down. "This is my home. I'm not moving anywhere."

Keller adjusted his hat. "Just remember what I told you, Carter. Complaints work both ways."

The officers walked back to their patrol car, leaving James alone on the porch. The recording showed him watching until they drove away, then methodically checking the angles of every camera. Naomi paused the video. "He installed these cameras because he was afraid of them."

Maya stared at the frozen image of their father in the same place where she had stood the previous day. "He knew they'd come back." Naomi opened another folder. "Dad kept written records too."

The complaint filed the next day was detailed and precise. James had documented every encounter, including the names of Sergeant Warren Keller and Officer Randall Pike. Maya read the page twice.

Another archive entry came from six months later and showed the same officers responding at a different house only a few blocks away. The twins did not have to guess what their father had feared. His own complaint history and the preserved videos showed that the conflict on their porch belonged to something older than their return home. The same officers, the same assumptions about who belonged, and the same resistance to complaints appeared again and again.

James had documented the encounters carefully, including the officers' names and the complaints he filed afterward. The careful record changed the meaning of the security cameras. They were not simply a homeowner's response to vandalism. They were part of the proof he had kept because earlier complaints had gone nowhere.

"They've been harassing Black homeowners for years," she said, her voice tight with anger. "And they've been protecting each other the entire time." Naomi found another entry. "Here's another incident from six months later. Same officers, different house three blocks away."

Maya walked to the open front door and looked out at the porch. Their father had stood there against the same men who had tried to intimidate them. "The cameras weren't for vandalism." "No," Naomi said. "Dad installed them because he expected retaliation."

The realization settled over Maya. Pike had tried to control a porch that had quietly documented his pattern for years. Their father had been building a record long before the twins returned home. "He was protecting us," Maya whispered. "Even after he was gone."

Maya's phone buzzed as Naomi was opening another archived video. The caller ID showed an unknown local number. Maya answered. "Special Agent Carter."

"This is Lieutenant Keller. I'm outside your property with a lawful inspection order. Please come to your front door."

Maya looked at Naomi, who was already closing the laptop. Through the window, they could see the same group of officers at the bottom of the porch. Keller held a folded document in his hand. "We're coming," Maya said, ending the call.

The twins walked to the front door together. Keller stood in the center, his lieutenant's uniform crisp and authoritative. Pike flanked him on the right with an eager, vindictive expression. Shaw and Mercer stood on either side, while Cole remained slightly behind them.

"Agent Carter," Keller said, extending the document. "This is a narrowly written inspection order for local recording equipment related to yesterday's incident." Maya accepted the papers and read carefully. The order authorized examination of security recording equipment in the residence, limited to footage from the previous forty-eight hours. It did not authorize removal of equipment without separate approval.

The language was narrow. It did not authorize a general search or removal of the recording equipment. Maya made the limits explicit before allowing Keller into the entrance area, while Pike's impatience beside him made clear that he wanted broader access. "This order allows inspection only," Maya said. "No seizure, no removal, and no expansion beyond the stated scope."

"Understood," Keller replied. "We simply need to verify what recordings exist." Naomi stepped beside her sister. "The inspection will be conducted on the porch and just inside the front doorway. The order doesn't authorize a general search of the house."

Pike shifted impatiently. "Lieutenant, we need access to wherever the equipment is located." "The equipment can be brought to you," Maya said. "Or you can inspect it from the authorized area."

Keller nodded. "That's acceptable. Please bring the recording system where we can examine it."

The twins exchanged a glance. Keller's sudden cooperation made him more dangerous, not less. Maya stepped back from the doorway. "Officers will remain on the porch. Lieutenant Keller may step inside the front entrance only."

Naomi moved to the security cabinet near the living-room entrance. A black metal local recorder sat inside with indicator lights and connection cables. "Here's the primary recorder," she said. "It stores forty-eight hours of local footage before automatic deletion."

Keller stepped just inside the doorway and examined the unit from several feet away. "And this contains recordings from yesterday's encounter?" "Among other recent footage," Naomi said.

Pike grew restless. "Lieutenant, how long does this take? It's just a recording box." "Patience, Sergeant."

Maya heard something in Keller's tone that felt like a signal. Before she could identify it, Pike moved. He rushed past Keller toward the security cabinet, reaching for the recorder.

"Hey." Naomi stepped into his path. "You're exceeding the search scope."

Pike tried to push past. Naomi planted her feet and blocked him. "Lieutenant, your sergeant is violating the inspection order." Shaw came through the doorway behind Pike. "Move aside, lady."

He grabbed Naomi from behind and tried to pull her away from the cabinet. Maya reacted immediately, using her defensive training to make Shaw release Naomi without striking him. "Officer Shaw, remove your hands." "Let go of me." "When you stop grabbing my sister."
