Mercer moved between Pike and the security cabinet. "Sergeant, the order doesn't authorize this." Cole stepped into the doorway. "Lieutenant, this search is exceeding its authorized scope. The inspection order doesn't permit seizure."

Pike ignored them and reached around Mercer toward the recording unit. "We need that evidence." In the confusion, Pike's elbow struck the security cabinet. The recorder tilted on its shelf and crashed to the hardwood floor. Its metal housing split open, internal boards scattered, and the indicator lights flickered before going dark.

Silence filled the hallway. Cole's body camera faced the broken unit. Mercer had a clear line of sight to Pike's position beside the cabinet. Shaw was close enough to know that Naomi had not thrown the device or touched the shelf when it fell. The physical evidence, the witnesses, and the camera angles all existed before Keller said a word, which made the story he chose next even more important.

Keller looked at the broken equipment and smiled slowly, as though the accident had solved a problem for him. "Well, that's unfortunate. Looks like your recording system has been damaged."

Pike stepped back, breathing hard but grinning. Shaw rubbed his arm while Maya returned to Naomi's side. Keller looked down at the wreckage. "Forty-eight hours of local footage," he said with false regret. "All destroyed in the struggle."

Cole stared at him. "Lieutenant, that wasn't supposed to happen." "Accidents occur during lawful inspections, Officer Cole."

Naomi knelt beside the damaged recorder and gathered a few loose components as though checking whether anything could be recovered. She glanced up at Maya. "The originals were uploaded off-site before anyone arrived."

Maya kept her face neutral. Keller clearly believed he had destroyed the only evidence. He had no idea the local box was only one part of the system. "Nobody move," Keller barked. "Everyone stay exactly where you are."

The officers froze. Pike stood near the broken cabinet, Shaw remained at the doorway, Mercer stayed between Pike and the scattered components, and Cole's body camera continued recording. Maya and Naomi stood together, watching Keller build his next version of events. He pointed to the wreckage. "What we have here is clear destruction of evidence during a lawful inspection."

Pike seized the opening. "That woman smashed the recorder." He pointed toward Naomi. "She knocked it down when I tried to examine it properly."

Naomi's voice remained steady. "I was blocking your unauthorized access to equipment outside the inspection scope." "She destroyed evidence to stop us reviewing those recordings," Pike continued. "She deliberately damaged the system."

Keller nodded as though the story were settled. "Agent Carter interfered with the inspection and caused the destruction of potential evidence." Cole stepped forward. "That's not what happened, Lieutenant." Every eye turned toward him.

"Officer Cole," Keller said slowly, "describe exactly what you observed." Cole squared his shoulders. "Sergeant Pike moved past the permitted inspection area and reached for the recorder. When Officer Mercer blocked him, Pike's elbow struck the cabinet and knocked the recorder to the floor."

Pike's face reddened. "Cole, you're mistaken about..." "I'm not mistaken," Cole interrupted. "I saw Pike knock the recorder down while attempting an unauthorized seizure."

Mercer nodded. "Officer Cole is correct. Sergeant Pike exceeded the inspection scope and caused the damage."

Shaw looked from Pike to the other officers, his earlier confidence evaporating. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. Maya watched Pike's authority begin to dissolve as his own subordinates refused to support a false account. Keller's jaw tightened. "Officers Cole and Mercer, you're dismissed from this scene immediately."

"Lieutenant, we're providing accurate witness statements," Mercer replied. "You're interfering with the investigation. Return to patrol duties now."

Cole hesitated. Then he shifted to a position where the porch microphones could clearly capture his voice. "For the record, Sergeant Pike previously ordered officers to disable body cameras during similar stops involving homeowners. Those orders were given during at least three encounters I personally witnessed."

The statement landed like a thunderbolt. Shaw's eyes widened. Pike went still, his face draining of color. "Officer Cole," Keller roared. "You're terminated from this scene."

But the damage was done. Cole had corroborated the twins' suspicions about Pike's pattern, and he had done it within range of a recording system Pike did not understand. Cole turned and walked away, followed by Mercer.

Shaw finally spoke, his voice uncertain. "Lieutenant, I... the recorder fell during the struggle. I'm not sure exactly how."

Pike stared at him with fury. His most loyal officer was wavering at the moment Pike needed support most. Keller surveyed the broken equipment, the scattered officers, and the two federal agents who had just heard their strongest piece of live corroboration. "Agent Carter," Keller said to Maya, "you and your sister will be investigated for evidence manipulation and obstruction."

Maya met his gaze. "We look forward to that investigation, Lieutenant."

Twenty minutes later, the police vehicles began leaving the Carter property. Pike had been ordered to report for an emergency meeting with department leadership. Shaw followed in another vehicle, visibly worried. Neighbors across the street applauded, believing they had witnessed the end of the confrontation.

Maya and Naomi remained on the porch. They understood Keller's retreat was tactical, not final. The real battle was only beginning.

That evening, Maya sat at the kitchen table organizing printed police reports while Naomi cross-referenced timestamps from the damaged local recording system. The house felt quieter without officers in the yard, but neither sister mistook that quiet for safety. "Cole's statement changes everything," Maya said. "Three previous encounters with disabled body cameras. That establishes Pike's pattern."

Naomi nodded. "Mercer backing him up makes it impossible for Keller to claim Cole was mistaken or lying." Through the front window, Maya saw neighbors still talking across the street. The applause when Pike left had sounded like victory, but she had learned not to trust easy wins. A car door slammed outside.

Lieutenant Keller walked alone across the yard. His uniform remained crisp and his posture confident, as though his plan had not just collapsed in front of witnesses. Maya and Naomi went back onto the porch. Keller stopped at the bottom of the steps. "Ladies, I have an update on today's events."

"We're listening," Maya replied. "After careful review of the incident involving your damaged recording equipment, Sergeant Pike has been fully reinstated to active duty. The initial suspension was premature and based on incomplete information." Naomi felt her stomach drop but kept her expression neutral.

Keller continued. "Furthermore, both of you are now under formal investigation for evidence manipulation and obstruction of a lawful police inspection. Your conduct today will be referred to FBI internal affairs for review." Maya's hands tightened at her sides. "On what grounds?"
