A part of corn that is often thrown away, unexpectedly 'as good as ginseng'
Corn silk, which is often discarded when processing corn, is considered a rare medicinal herb, even comparable to ginseng in nutritional value. Known as jade rice, corn silk is often used in traditional medicine to treat diseases related to the liver and gallbladder.
Corn silk contains vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin B1, B2, B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin C, vitamin PP, flavonoids, pantothenic acid, isotol, saponins, steroids such as sytosterol and sigmasterol, bitter substances, fatty oils, traces of essential oils and many other trace elements.
It can be said that corn silk is a mixed medicine of many vitamins and micronutrients in natural form necessary for the body to fight oxidation better than any other tonic.
Note when using corn silk water
Corn silk brings many health benefits, but should not be used instead of filtered water.
“Overuse of corn silk water can cause excessive diuresis, long-term use can cause water and electrolyte imbalance. Do not drink at night because it can cause frequent urination at night,” Dr. Nhi noted.
When using corn silk, it should be used fresh because it contains more nutrients than dried. Dried corn silk should only be used for a short time, avoid humid places that can easily grow mold, causing harm to health.
According to Dr. Nhi, some subjects need to pay attention when using corn silk such as:
- Drinking corn silk water can cause low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue and other unpleasant symptoms of the digestive tract, even making low blood pressure worse.
- For people with hypoglycemia, drinking corn silk water can worsen hypoglycemic symptoms such as anxiety, hand tremors, sweating.
- Corn silk contains a certain amount of pollen that can cause discomfort for people with pollen allergies.
- Patients who are taking anticoagulants should not use corn silk water.
Doctor Yen Nhi noted that each person's physical condition and health are different, so before using corn silk water, it is best to consult a specialist for advice to ensure safety and effectiveness. Furthermore, in case you are taking other medications to treat diseases that may interact with corn silk water, it is even more necessary to consult a specialist.
