"You can't go up there. I didn't say you could go in there. I said the bathroom. I said the bathroom! That door was supposed to be closed!"
"Ma'am, the door was open, and I'm not going back up there right now, I'm standing right here with you."
"I want you to leave. I want you both to leave my house. I'm allowed to say that. I'm allowed to tell you to leave."
"You are," Hendricks said. "You're absolutely allowed. We're going to step outside." And she and Aranda backed out through the front door onto the walk, and Hendricks turned and saw me standing at the corner of my garage. She came straight across the lawn toward me. Her face was very composed. There was a little flush high on her cheeks that hadn't been there before.
"Mr. Dupuis," she said, low. "That store account in your name. The one you reported in June. Do you know if anything was purchased on it? Specific items?"
"They wouldn't tell me. Just the balance. Three thousand eight hundred something."
"Did you order a laptop in May? A gaming laptop, about the size of a—" she held her hands apart "—in a black box?"
"No."
