The second sheet was addressed to me personally. It said that a complaint had been filed regarding "the placement of surveillance equipment at 2214 Towhee Court" and that my attendance at the meeting was "strongly encouraged."

It was signed by Debra Pelletier, President, and nobody else.

I read the amendment three times standing at my mailbox. Then I went inside and read it again with a pen, the way I read a legal description, underlining every noun. "Stored media." "Secure disposal." I had been to enough HOA meetings to know that the board did not usually care what happened to anybody's stored media. They cared about paint colors and trash cans and whether the Szendreys' son was running a business out of the garage. Nobody writes "surrendered to the board for secure disposal" unless the thing they actually want is the disposal.

I called Maisie. She was at her mom's that week, and she put me on speaker in what sounded like a car, and when I read it to her she was silent for a while, and then she said, "Dad. That's about your post."

"I know."

"That's literally three days after your post."

"I know, Mais."

"What are you going to do?"

I told her I was going to go to the meeting and explain how the cameras were aimed, and that I'd bring the screenshots, and that it would be fine, because the cameras were fine. I believed that. I believed in the power of a clearly presented fact.
