"Right, Sophia. How old are you now?""Sixteen, sir."Mr. Wellington nodded and drank his water. He looked around his kitchen as if seeing it for the first time. His eyes moved from the expensive appliances to the marble counters to the fancy light fixtures. He owned all of this, but most days he just grabbed coffee and left for work."Your mother does good work," he said. "House always looks perfect.""Yes, sir. She works very hard.""I'm sure she does." Mr. Wellington paused, then seemed to remember something. "Oh, I'm having some people over for dinner tomorrow night. Important business partners. Make sure your mother knows to do the dining room twice, and the main living room needs to be spotless.""I'll tell her, sir."Mr. Wellington finished his water and started to leave the kitchen, but then he stopped and turned back to Sophia."You like music, kid?"Sophia was surprised by the question. "Yes, sir.""What kind of music?""All kinds, sir, but I really like classical music. Piano music especially."Mr. Wellington raised his eyebrows. He hadn't expected that answer; most kids her age liked pop music or rap. "Piano music... that's interesting. Do you play?"Sophia hesitated. She wasn't sure if she should talk about herself too much. "A little, sir.""A little, huh?" Mr. Wellington seemed amused. "Well, I've got a piano in the living room. Big, expensive thing. Cost me more than most people make in a year, but nobody in this house plays it. It just sits there looking pretty."Sophia didn't know what to say to that; she just nodded politely.Mr. Wellington walked toward the living room, and for some reason, Sophia felt like she should follow him. She got up from her chair and walked quietly behind him. She had never been in the main living room before. It was even more beautiful than she had imagined: high ceilings and big windows that let in lots of light, expensive sofas and chairs arranged around a marble coffee table, and paintings hanging on the walls in gold frames. And in the corner, like a sleeping giant, sat the black piano.
