Maria looked confused and scared. "Sir?""I told your daughter to play the piano. I had no idea she could play like this."Maria looked back and forth between her daughter and her employer. She had worked so hard to keep this job; she had followed every rule, been respectful and professional for fifteen years, and now her daughter was playing with Mr. Wellington's expensive piano like it was a toy."I'm so sorry, sir," Maria said. "She knows better than to touch your things. It won't happen again.""Maria, listen to me," Mr. Wellington said. He stood up and walked closer to her. "Your daughter is incredibly talented. I've never heard piano playing like that outside of a concert hall."Carmen and James were still standing in the doorways, listening to every word. They had never seen Mr. Wellington talk to Maria like this before; usually, he just gave orders or asked questions about the cleaning. Now he was talking to her like she was a real person."She's been taking lessons," Maria said quietly. "At our church. I didn't know she was this good.""How long has she been playing?""Eight years, sir. Since she was eight years old."Mr. Wellington looked amazed. "Eight years... and she's never played on a real piano before?""The church has a piano, sir. It's old, but it works."Sophia was still sitting on the piano bench, not sure what to do. She felt like she was in trouble, but Mr. Wellington didn't seem angry; he seemed excited, almost."Show me your hands," Mr. Wellington said to Sophia.Sophia held out her hands. They were small but strong, her fingertips bearing small calluses from years of practice.Mr. Wellington looked at her hands like they were something precious. "These are the hands of a real musician," he said. "Do you know how rare it is to find someone with this much natural talent?"Sophia shook her head. She had never thought of herself as especially talented; she just loved to play music.
