Sophia looked out at the audience and saw tears in her mother's eyes. Mr. Wellington was smiling prouder than she had ever seen him smile. The professors were writing furiously.Dr. Martinez looked up and nodded at her. "Thank you, Sophia. That was extraordinary."As she walked off the stage, Sophia felt like she was floating. She had played better than she had ever played in her life; she had given everything she had to give.The results would be announced that evening. The waiting was agonizing. Sophia, Maria, and Mr. Wellington had dinner at a restaurant near campus, but none of them could eat much.At 7:00 p.m., they returned to the concert hall. All the auditionees and their families gathered to hear the results.Dr. Martinez took the stage with an envelope in his hand. "First, let me say that the level of talent we heard today was exceptional. Choosing only twelve students from this group was incredibly difficult." He opened the envelope.
